Tips & Techniques Christmas Hosting a Cookie Exchange
Hosting a Cookie Exchange

A cookie exchange is a wonderful way to collect an assortment of different cookies, without having to bake all of them yourself. The concept is simple: Host a party and invite friends to bring a batch of their favorite homemade cookies. Then everyone swaps cookies and returns home with a delectable selection to have on hand during the holidays. To inspire you, we've selected some recipes that are perfect for a cookie exchange, including molasses cookies, crunchy biscotti and thumbprint cookies.

When planning a cookie exchange, keep these tips in mind:

  • Invite guests three to four weeks in advance. Ask them to bring one dozen cookies for each person invited, a tray for displaying their cookies, containers for carrying cookies home, and copies of their recipes.

  • One week before the party, find out what cookies guests are bringing to avoid duplicates. Suggest that they bake their cookies a couple of days before the party, as freshly made cookies tend to stick together when stacked.

  • Decorate a table with holiday greenery and ornaments. When your guests arrive, ask them to display their cookies on the table.

  • Serve a selection of savory hors d'oeuvres or a simple meal along with festive beverages.

  • During the party, invite guests to walk around the table and pick up one dozen of each type along with a copy of the recipe.
