Frozen Cranberry No-groni
Our riff on the Negroni, this wintry frozen drink is proof that a festive holiday cocktail can be spirit free. The secret? Nonalcoholic aperitivo rosso, an aromatic drink reminiscent of sweet vermouth, which pairs perfectly with wintry cranberry and orange juices for a complex and colorful drink.
Ingredients:
For the cinnamon simple syrup:
- 1 cup (7 oz./200 g) sugar
- 1 fresh bay leaf
- Two 3-inch (7.5-cm) strips orange peels with their pith
- 3 cinnamon sticks
3 oz. (90 ml) nonalcoholic aperitivo rosso- 2 oz. (60 ml) pure cranberry juice
- 1/2 oz. (15 ml) fresh orange juice
- Large pinch of kosher salt
- 1 1/2 to 2 cups (6 to 8 oz./180 to 250 g) ice cubes
- 2 fresh rosemary sprigs (optional)
- Sugared cranberries (optional)
Directions:
To make the cinnamon simple syrup, in a small saucepan over medium-high heat, combine 1 cup (8 fl. oz./250 ml) water, the sugar, bay leaf, orange peel and cinnamon sticks. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for 20 minutes. Strain the mixture into a heatproof bowl, discard the solids and set aside to cool completely. Once cooled, it can be stored for up to week in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
To assemble the drinks, combine 1 1/2 to 2 oz. (45 to 60 ml) of the cinnamon simple syrup, the aperitivo rosso, cranberry juice, orange juice, salt and ice cubes in a blender and blend until thoroughly combined and slushy. Taste and add more of the cinnamon simple syrup if more sweetness is desired, blending it until combined.
Divide between two chilled coupe or rocks glasses. Garnish each with a rosemary sprig and sugared cranberries, if desired, and serve immediately. Serves 2.
