According to one popular story, the Americano was invented during World War II, when American soldiers in Italy would dilute their espresso with hot water so that it more closely resembled the coffee they were used to drinking at home. Whether or not that story is true, it is still much loved by many who enjoy the complex flavor and aroma of espresso but prefer a less intense drink. You can vary the quantity of water to suit your taste; a ratio of 1 part espresso to 2 parts water is typical, but some people prefer much less or more water in their drink. It’s up to you.

Ingredients:

  • 1 double shot of espresso (about 2 fl. oz./60 ml)
  • 1/2 cup (4 fl. oz./125 ml) water

Directions:

Using an espresso machine, prepare a double shot of espresso according to the manufacturer’s instructions, pulling it into a large porcelain cup or heatproof glass.

If your espresso machine has a hot water spout, decant 1/2 cup (4 fl. oz./125 ml) water from the machine into the cup on top of your espresso. (If your espresso machine doesn’t have a hot water spout, heat the water in an electric kettle or in a kettle on the stove top before making your espresso, heating it to about 185°F/85°C, then pour the hot water on top of your espresso.) Serve immediately. Makes 1 drink.
