Complete Your Tabletop with A Butter Dish

Treat yourself to the finer aspects of dining with a butter dish. While this humble accessory may seem like a basic item to grab and go, there are multiple elements to this kitchenware to consider. Let this unique container and its more elevated aspects help you refine and delight in simple tasks like making toast or gulping down bulletproof coffee, which is, yes, butter in your caffeine.

Deciding Between A Butter Crock, Keeper or Dish

Peruse the fine array of choices for your butter by weighing whether you need a butter dish, keeper or crock. Each does approximately the same thing in giving you a way to store your butter and making it easy to dole it out at mealtimes. There are slight differences though that can skew you towards one kind or the other, depending on how you like to enjoy cooking, dining or entertaining.

  • Butter dishes are the standard dish you've probably seen your whole life. They're either rectangular or oval because sticks of butter are shaped that way. You put the butter on the tray and cap it with a lid, usually decorative, and pop the whole thing in the fridge or on the table as needed. If you like a cold pat, this is your solution.
  • A butter keeper is a slightly more complex operation, but still very simple to use and enjoy. Your butter goes into a cylindrical jar and the jar goes into a housing that contains just a little bit of water. The housing is the decorative part of the crock. The water keeps the butter room temperature at all times without threat of rancidity in most climates.
  • A butter crock is sometimes just the same thing as a butter keeper, but if you're too busy to change the water in your keeper every few days, you may just prefer a bell-shaped jar that you can put back in the refrigerator when done. A crock can offer a clean way to thaw butter before use and an easy way to clean up afterward.

Designing Your Tabletop Looks

The use of a butter dish is more than functional. While its functionality is significant--easy service, easy storage and easy spreading--the decorative element of these dishes is a touchstone of the modern table.

  • Go for classic white ceramic to match your everyday table.
  • Choose copper for an upscale look or special occasions.
  • Enjoy folk art designs, like Delft-inspired motifs or floral patterns.
  • Select a saturated stoneware color to call out your dish or crock.
  • Find a beautiful gourmet spreader to complement the look you choose.

Pairing Your Butter Dish

Branch out with other dining accessories to keep the good looks going. Oven-to-table styles offer more covered dish options, while teapots, creamer sets and gravy boats all add to an eclectic tabletop, anchored by your ever-present butter dish.
