Soon after stepping behind the bar, Alex Jump knew she’d found her calling. Today, she takes a lighthearted approach to crafting signature cocktails, adding a bit of food-making whimsy to every drink. A member of the Williams Sonoma 2023 Chefs’ Collective, this inspiring mixologist was formerly the bar manager at Death & Co. in Denver and cofounded Focus on Health to advocate for the physical and mental well-being of the food and beverage industry.

This cocktail that Alex created is her choice for a Friendsgiving dinner on Thanksgiving. It combines sweet vermouth with gin, sherry and Amaro CioCiaro, a bittersweet Italian liqueur that’s rich with herbs and spices. Alex likes to serve this drink in a Nick and Nora glass, which was named after Nick and Nora Charles, the fictional couple created by Dashiell Hammett in his novel The Thin Man; a Champagne coupe glass also works well.

Ingredients:

  • 10.5 oz. (325 ml) sweet vermouth, preferably Carpano Antica
  • 7 oz. (215 ml) Wonderbird Spirits gin
  • 1.75 oz. (52 ml) Amontillado sherry, preferably Lustau
  • 1.75 oz. (52 ml) Amaro CioCiaro
  • 3.5 oz. (106 ml) water
  • Lemon twists for garnish

Directions:

In a bottle, combine the vermouth, gin, sherry, Amaro CioCiaro and water and store in the fridge. When ready to serve, pour into Nick and Nora glasses or Champagne coupe glasses. Garnish each with a lemon twist. Serves 4 to 6.
