Rated 1 out of 5 by The Cook from Worst kitchen torch ever After a year I needed to refill. There is no brand on the torch and a manual is not available online. I tried the typical approach using a standard butane refill cylinder using every switch combination and every tip in the pack. The fuel went everywhere including my hand causing a painful frost. After an hour and very frosted fingers I gave up and threw it in the trash. Since it’s past the warranty period I have no recourse.Date published: 2020-01-19Rated 2 out of 5 by scraps from Didn’t withstand the test of time I purchased this nine years ago as part of my wedding registry. I am an avid home cook with experience in professional kitchens, and even though I did not intend to use this often I knew I would want a torch for occasional dessert projects. The controls are a little clunky; I find it hard to operate everything with one hand, but I don’t use this torch enough for that to be a significant problem. When refilling it with butane though, I do find that the unit “pushes back” somewhat— it’s as if the unit is fighting the recharge. I waste fuel in this process. Neither of those complaints would cause me to write a negative review; however, the housing itself is what is so horrible. Over time, the housing has become sticky and gummy. This is not because I don’t keep it clean or because I touch it with dirty hands. The housing is a plastic/silicone type material that breaks down. I have seen it happen with spatula handles, wine bottle openers, and tons of other kitchen implements, regardless of whether they go in the dishwasher. My unit has become so sticky and gummy that when I use it, I need to wear kitchen gloves, otherwise, my hands get so sticky that I need to use lava soap to get the gumminess off of them. It is a total waste of time especially considering that you use the torch to save time- if I wanted things to take longer I could just use my broiler. My beef is that there are other kitchen torches on the market not made of this material that don’t become gummy. Don’t make the same mistake that I did; buy a different unit from a different vendor that is not made of this material. If WS sold a torch made of a different material, I’d probably buy it. I’m generally happy with most of what I got on on my registry.Date published: 2020-01-02Rated 5 out of 5 by globrit1 from handy little torch I purchased this torch several months ago and like some of the reviews here, I also had trouble filling it the first time I attempted to do so. I also found out that as usual it was due to "user error". The next time I used it, I made sure that the nozzle on the butane canister was directly over the filling hole on the bottom of the torch. Once I did this I did not have a problem filling it up, counting 3 seconds to fill up with the gas before removing the butane canister and then placing it back on the torch for another 3 seconds. I continued doing this until it overflowed which meant the torch was filled to capacity.Date published: 2018-05-30Rated 4 out of 5 by Frank Homen from Worked great for a while My Father uses this a few times a year and has loved it. Now the nozzle seems to be missing a internal piece and it will not light. It appears the piece forms the butane pattern so it burns correctly or at all. Can you get replacement parts for this? I'd love to fix it for him.Date published: 2017-08-01Rated 1 out of 5 by TX Bound from Buyer Beware Received this kitchen torch as a gift. My daughter swears by W&S I told her about the reviews and of course I cannot get mine to fill. There has to be a way to get help with this or replaced. I don't want my daughter to be upset.Date published: 2017-04-26Rated 2 out of 5 by Texashandle from filling problems Filling the torch with standard 8 oz butane can, when you press the can down on the torch until they are flat against each other, the butane just leaks everywhere. A tiny amount gets into the torch. I removed the metal ring on the bottom of the torch, held by two tiny screws, and then was able to fill the torch without it leaking. How can the design/manufacturing be so flawed? Have others have had the same problem? Also, I cannot read the fuel fill level. Once filled, the torch lighted: move switch out of the OFF position; flip down the safety lock; depress the ignite button with your thumb. Note that if you release the ignite button the flame will go out but it will continue to leak butane until you move the lock switch to OFF position. It should not be so easy to leak butane. To avoid this you must only use the lock switch to turn the flame off. In short, it works, but it is a little too finicky when it could really be made more simple and reliable. I wouldn't recommend this torch.Date published: 2015-12-30Rated 5 out of 5 by Carol2554 from Works like a charm After reading the reviews on line, I went to my nearby store to make my purchase, the ladies explained all what was needed, instructions were included as well. I did a practice run of making S'mores in a jar & wallah....works like a charm.Date published: 2015-09-18Rated 1 out of 5 by 50yrsAhomeCook from Where's the instructions??? While strolling around in the local WS, I noticed a house brand creme brûlée lighter. I have had perfect success using a Ronson candle lighter. Well, thought I, if the Ronson works, then this "dedicated" WS device will probably work even better. WRONG...despite the fact that there were no instructions included, I managed to get it lit--once. I was not impressed with it and it didn't work as well as the Ronson throwaway candle lighter. Just took it out of the drawer for a test ride after 4 months of no brûlées, and, guess what, now it doesn't work at all. Back to the Ronson. BTW WS: Why aren't the directions somewhere on the website?Date published: 2014-12-10
