Chunky applesauce is a sweet and simple dish that is great for dessert or an afternoon snack. We like to pair our chunky applesauce with potato latkes. Our chunky applesauce recipe has a bracing tartness. If you wish to make this recipe even sweeter, add a little more sugar to taste. Or, if you want a healthier alternative, check out our sugar-free applesauce recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 8 to 10 tart apples, such as Granny Smith,
peeled, cored and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • Juice of 2 to 3 oranges (about 1 cup)
  • 1/2 cup sugar, or to taste
  • 2 tsp. grated lemon zest
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

Directions:

Step 1. Combine Ingredients and Cook

In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, combine the apples and orange juice. Cook, stirring often, until the apples start to soften, about 10 minutes. Stir in the sugar, lemon zest and cinnamon and cook, uncovered, stirring as needed, until the apples are tender but still chunky, 20 to 25 minutes.

Step 2. Serve

Taste and adjust the seasonings and serve warm. Or cool, cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Rewarm before serving. Makes 4 to 5 cups.

How to Make Chunky Applesauce Without Sugar

To make sugar-free applesauce, you only need three ingredients: apples, water and cinnamon. Combine apples and water in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until apples soften. Stir in cinnamon and cook until apples are tender but still chunky.

Make sure to pick up sweet apples to create a healthy homemade applesauce the whole family will enjoy—guilt free!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent taste I made this recipe to go with latkes that my daughter made from scratch using a William Sonoma recipe. I was a little hesitant about using orange juice but I was so wrong. This is a delicious tasting apple sauce which was a great complement to the latkes. I would definitely make this again (even if there were no latkes).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Will make this again! This turned out great, however I did change a little bit to fit my liking. The Cinnamon didn't seem to make a difference so I added an extra tsp. I also used 1 Tbsp. lemon zest. Great recipe to work off of though, I really enjoy how it turned out!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and delicious Normally, I am not a huge fan of applesauce. But I made this as a side for potato latke. Wow. So delicious and simple to put together that I will make it again just for a side with any meal.
