Rated 2 out of 5 by SkipII from General purpose means no clear purpose The problem with any general purpose tool is that ie does several things, but few or any of them well. That is the case with this knife: He exaggerated serrations may make it easy to cut through something tough but also can tear into something more delicate. It is short and agile for some tasks, far to short for others. Also, I have found it's sharpness sadly lacking, but that is because it really does not have a true edge. This is probably a decent knife for someone who does not really know knives, does not have real knife skills or -- whether because of budget or cooking lifestyle -- does not need two or more knives that excel in different tasks around the kitchen. If someone wants to learn and grow in their cutting skills in the kitchen, they would be better off developing those skills in a good chef's knife and expanding from there rather than pretending this knife can do it all for them.Date published: 2018-01-07Rated 5 out of 5 by RobO99 from Best knife ever! LOVE IT I use this knife for everything except cutting small herbs/etc. It works great, extra sharp and I always hand wash as per instructions. This is a little investment that will go a long way and it seems will last a long time (only have used for a couple months). Purchase this one! I looked at many utility knifes and was overwhelmed - glad I made this purchase!Date published: 2015-05-19Rated 5 out of 5 by JessB1983 from Excellent All Purpose Knife This knife is quickly replacing my chef's knife for many daily tasks in the kitchen. Great on tomatoes, vegetables, meat, even bread. Very sharp and lightweight.Date published: 2014-08-26Rated 5 out of 5 by Hyrurg from Great quality knife One of the best knives in my kitchen. Great quality, excellent accessory to any house/kitchen.Date published: 2014-06-30Rated 5 out of 5 by Schmitt from Outstanding We are true believers. My wife LOVES her Shun Kaji knives, and the Ultimate Utility is absolutely wonderful! She bought a Shun Kaji set and I gave her the Ultimate Utility knife for her birthday. Now, I'm usually good for jewelry or flowers, but this was a HIT! She uses it multiple times every day and extols its virtues every time. This one's a winner! I clean the knives, and they are truly works of art.Date published: 2013-08-12Rated 5 out of 5 by 2belles from MUST HAVE tool! If you only choose one Shun knife, this is the one! (And it's not just because it has a super cute monogramming option!!) I have several Shun knives and this is the one I reach for time and again. The blade length is perfect for so many things: cutting rolls, making sammies, general slicing and peeling. It has replaced three other knives in my kitchen and is truly the workhorse of the group. You will not regret this purchase!Date published: 2013-08-03Rated 5 out of 5 by bobbysmommy from extremely useful Nice and sharp--easy to handle...use it ALL the time. I even bought one for my daughter for Christmas.Date published: 2012-12-19Rated 5 out of 5 by AimeeP from Almost the Only Knife I use! I've had this knife for almost 2 years now and I still use it every day! It is just now starting to show some slight dulling as I've never had it sharpened. I agree with previous reviewers that it really is almost the only knife you need. I still use a paring knife for cutting small things. I do have to warn others to be careful when using or cleaning it especially when it's new as I did cut myself a couple times when I first got it (once pretty badly). As I use it so frequently, storage has never been much of an issue. It's on the cutting board all the time. I'm not sure how I would store it safely though, besides putting it in the box it came in. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase and will buy a paring knife in the same brand when my current one is kicked as this is now the only brand I'll buy for knives!Date published: 2012-09-18
