- Garlic Toast with Tomatoes Recipe
The bread can be toasted on a grill or in a toaster. If using a grill, prepare a charcoal or gas grill for direct grilling over medium-high heat.
If using firm salad tomatoes, core them and then slice about 1/4 inch thick. If using red, ripe salad tomatoes, core and peel them and then cut into 1/2-inch dice. If using cherry tomatoes, cut them in half. Tear the larger basil leaves into a few pieces and leave the smaller leaves whole.
If using a grill, lay the bread on the rack about 8 inches above the fire and toast, turning once, until crisp and golden, about 4 minutes total. Alternatively, toast the bread in a toaster. As soon as the bread is ready, rub a whole garlic clove vigorously over one side of it. The rough surface of the bread will shred the garlic like a grater, leaving very little in your hand after 2 slices are rubbed with 1 of the cloves.
Divide the bread slices, garlic side up, between 2 plates. Arrange the tomatoes in a single layer on the bread, dividing evenly. If you are using cherry tomatoes, squash the halves, cut side down, into the bread. Sprinkle with salt and drizzle generously with the olive oil. Distribute the basil evenly on top. Serve immediately. Serves 2.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Nate from We adore our Dualit Yesterday my wife told me that our Dualit was acting strangely. On occasion the timer would stall at the 1 minute mark. She was sad, kinda strangely sad. Our red two slice Dualit has been a fixture in the kitchen for 15 years. We've been through a fridge and a dishwasher and a new set of double ovens, and, all the while, the Dualit kept chugging along. The "tick tick tick" of it's timer is as much a sound of breakfast as sizzling bacon. And now something's amiss. So I was looking around at alternatives or replacing it with another Dualit when I started reading reviews here at Williams-Sonoma.com. Without getting into specifics, I'll just say that some of the critiques were disheartening. As a 15 year owner, here's an honest assessment of our Dualit. 1) It's an analog product with a mechanical timer. You'll need to figure out what amount of toasting time works best for your preference. This isn't unlike the toasting settings on other toasters. The part which seems to confuse people is that that time may need to be adjusted if you're toasting multiple slices of bread one after another. So you finish one set at 3 minutes, when the toaster was cold to begin with, the next set may only take 2 minutes. If you set it to 3 again and you're not paying attention, it'll burn. Treat it a little bit like an oven. 2) Speaking of the timer, it ticks. There's noise. You can't make it stop until it reaches zero. That's just the way it is. So if you're golden brown and there's still a minute left and you pop the toast out, it'll tick tick tick for a minute whether you like it or not. 3) The toast-lifting mechanism is essentially the "lift and look" feature found in other brands. You can look at your toast without effecting the heating element at any point during the process. If you want "a bit more" you just turn the timer accordingly. As referenced in point #2, you can take your toast out as well, at any point. You don't need to stand there and watch the bread burn. 4) It doesn't make perfect toast. One side may be darker than the other. Sometimes I take a look and flip a piece of bread around mid-cycle. But if I don't, it's still better than every piece of toast you'll ever have at any restaurant, ever. As an aside, I saw a toaster comparison site where the reviewer toasted an entire loaf of bread, two slices at a time, two after two after two. They noted consistency and evenness of browning and used that as a favorable criteria. Ok. But what actually happens in my real-life kitchen is we make two pieces of toast, total, in our Dualit, and they're fine. 5) It's great looking and doesn't diminish the appearance of a high-end appliance kitchen. In other words, you won't put it away after using it. 6) There are no bells and whistles. None. There's a knob and a lever. I can't speak for the next gen Dualit, but mine pretty much toasts bread and regular bagels and that's it. If you're looking to toast "extra fluffy" bagels or super thick Texas toast or 10 inch long slices of ciabatta, you want to look elsewhere. Back to the current timer issue. The plan, should "occasional" become "every time" is have our 15 year-old Dualit fixed. We enjoy it that much. Parts are available for DIY'ers, and Dualit does repairs too. I betcha can't say that about many other toaster brands. And if/when it finally breaks, the wife has already said that we'd be getting another.Date published: 2019-06-08Rated 1 out of 5 by Sara46518 from Expensive piece of junk My husband brought this toaster home over a year ago, and I need to get up the nerve to just chuck it and see if our old toaster is still in the garage somewhere. The slots are not long enough to fit anything longer than old-fashioned square bread; anything longer and you have to turn the slice on its side. Nothing thicker than an English muffin will fit, so bagels and thick-cut bread are constantly getting stuck. It toasts unevenly, and it's extremely difficult to find the correct setting to one's toasting liking. I have tried millions of times with this overpriced piece of junk and am disappointed each and every time I toast anything. I wish we could return it. I'll probably just smash it in the backyard w/a hammer, which will at least be somewhat satisfying.Date published: 2019-03-06Rated 2 out of 5 by gmmargh from Giving It Away After 1 Month So, this is a beautiful toaster. I admit I was seduced by its stylish look, clean lines, and retro-cool vibe. It looks great on my counter. However, it is a real pain to use. So much so that my husband (admittedly not patient with appliances) refused to use it after two tries. It is "fiddly." You have to check every setting before using it. If you put in two slices, and the last person to use it made only one, you get one slice with an untoasted side. The slots are very narrow. Too narrow for pre-sliced "artisan" bread--I have to push that down with my fingers. Everything is kind of a hassle with this thing--now for some people, that's not a big deal, although the narrow slots--narrower than any I've seen, might be an issue. So, be forewarned. I am going to offer this to my brother, who will love the style and probably not care about the hassle of using it. As for me, I am buying a toaster oven.Date published: 2018-12-28Rated 5 out of 5 by PeggieRN from Why did I wait so long ? I purchased this about a month ago in Citron Yellow , packaged very well , no damage , perks up my countertop and makes great toast .. we love it .. Citron yellow is a cross between a bright yellow and bright green it is gorgeous ... appears very well made , simple dials , what’s not to love ?Date published: 2018-07-05Rated 5 out of 5 by Lynn from Perfect toast on first try! I am really pleased with this Dualit Classit 2 slice toaster. I followed the instructions and my toast came out perfect on the very first try! I ran it through the recommended conditioning cycle before first use (this is a one time process for a brand new toaster and does not need to be repeated). Then I selected the two slice setting, put a slice of bread in each slot and turned the knob to the dot just past the 2 on the time selector. My toast was evenly browned on both sides and came out exactly as I like my toast. The manual lift feature is really nice too - no need for toast tongs and it allows you to check the browning without interrupting the cycle. There is a light and a ticking noise that tells you it's toasting. I ordered brass color and it blends fine with my champagne bronze kitchen cabinet hardware. I also like the retro design of this toaster. Williams Sonoma apparently does not sell optional accessories for this toaster but I was able to find the warming rack online at another popular site. The warming rack sits on top of the toaster and can be used to reheat pizza slices, croissants or other breads that would you would not want to put in the toaster slots. A sandwich toasting rack is another accessory available online.Date published: 2018-06-15Rated 4 out of 5 by Cherp from Great toaster, color is nothing like the photos I really like this toaster. It makes perfect toast. However, the color is not nearly as blue as it is in the photo in person. It's much more of a muted turquoise. Unfortunately it doesn't really match the rest of my kitchen as a result, but it still works really well.Date published: 2018-04-05Rated 4 out of 5 by ChefMay from It’s a nice toaster... Short story: I purchased the mint green 2 slice toaster. The hue is a true mint color. I am a sucker for anything mint green, so when I say this mint is a true mint green...you better believe it! There are those who will spend any money based on just looks, I am guilty of conforming to that and this toaster was one of those purchases! So, looks...hands down, 5 stars! Function, 4 stars because it really is just a toaster. It does heat up fast. However, the slots are way too slim to fit “American Sized” bread and bagel. There is a selection for one or two slices, which makes this product energy efficient. However, you can only heat up one bagel at a time. Heat distribution is good. Sometimes the toasts come out like twins, sometimes not. Sometimes the toaster gets too warm even at the low setting. So, I have to cool it off for a few seconds until I can pop more bread into it. I use my toaster almost every day (3 months now). I am somewhat satisfied with its quality. Honestly, for the price it comes in...it should do more. But, I am a junkie for a 1950’s pastel colored kitchen! So, I cannot say I regret going for this toaster. It seems durable and looks like it will last for very many years. Long Story: I was shocked to receive a beat up looking $200+ toaster. The box was torn and even had a huge hole on it as if it were literally kicked around on the floor. The inside was another story. Unwrapped and no kind of protection with cardboard or anything at all. Another shocker, my toaster wobbled! One of the rubber feet did not match with the others. I looked underneath to see why it was uneven and noticed one was way shorter than the rest. Then, I looked on the bottom side and saw scratches all over the panel! I wanted to LOVE this thing and I had no other choice but to love it for all eternity as it was a final sale. Once I did troubleshoot it, read the instructions over and over again in hopes that it was all my errors...nope, got burnt toasts at the low settings, inconsistent browning (dark upper or lower), or one toast would come out completely un-toasted while the other would be dark (yes, while being on the 2 slice selection). I tried this out for 2 days and finally contacted Williams-Sonoma. Luckily, customer service happily sent me a replacement for a “final sale” item. This was because the packaging was a disaster, plus the defects. This purchase was my first few orders with Williams-Sonoma. I was appalled that this kind of thing could slip through them. I felt embarrassed for Williams-Sonoma, but at the same time it made me trust this company even more. So, I say 5+++ stars to Williams-Sonoma customer service! Even though my toaster is probably not the number 1 best in the market, I love it anyway! Haha!Date published: 2018-03-23Rated 5 out of 5 by Barb from This is a real toaster wo all the gadgets A back-to-basics toaster - works great. Only suggestion is that the slots are standard length and some artisan bread doesn't fit cleanly. Width of the slots are more than adequate. The sandwich cage is a must but too bad WS dos not sell. Spend the money if you can afford it.Date published: 2017-12-02
