Care

  • Pizza stone: To avoid damage, wipe surface with a soft, damp sponge after each use. If more thorough cleaning is required, remove stone with extreme care, then clean top with firm sponge and warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry thoroughly; never soak stone or place in dishwasher. Unplug oven before reinstalling the cleaned stone.
  • Pizza peel: Dishwasher-safe. Avoid abrasive cleaners and metal scouring pads, as they may damage the surface.
  • Pizza pan: Requires initial seasoning. Follow instructions included with the oven before first use.

As a pizza lover and experienced (some might say fanatical) pizza maker, I have been waiting for a 700 plus degree electric pizza oven all my life. I was thrilled when it finally came into existence in the form of the Breville Pizzaiolo. Together with pizza dough made from either Antimo Caputo 00 or Le 5 Stagioni Pizza Napoletana 00 flour, this makes the best pizza I have had since I was a child, when little pizzerias were still run by first or second generation Italian Americans. To my horror, though, the pizza oven stopped working today, leaving the smell of burnt wire or components and permanently flashing lights (until unplugging it) in its wake. I admit that I am a fairly heavy user, making pizza several times a week, but still expected it to last a good two or three years. Even a year would have been less of a tragedy. Instead, it expired 11 months after its purchase in mid October, 2018. I looked online at other reviews before posting this to see if other early adopters had the same problem and discovered that most of the reviews received the oven free and that happened much less than a year ago. If you are as enthusiastic as I am about pizza, this oven may still be worth it, even if it needs replacing every 11 months. It is that good; at least we know that, but everyone else will think you are a fanatic.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes restaurant quality pizza...even for a novice I was on the fence about whether or not or take the plunge and spend a big chunk of change on a small appliance that costs more than my conventional oven, but I am so glad I did! The Pizzaiolo was a good investment as it makes the best pizza in literally 2 minutes. I would say my family are moderate pizza lovers-ordering pizza maybe 2-3 times a month. Now, we don’t dare order out anymore. The pizza we make in the Breville Pizzaiolo is fresh and I know what goes in it. I choose the ingredients and honestly, per pie it does cost less (if you can over the price of the oven). We recently had a pizza “party” with family and we each made our own personal pizzas. If you prepare the toppings in advance then the pizza making is so quick. We actually couldn’t keep up-we we’re still assembling the pizza when the timer went off for the previous one. The Pizzaiolo comes with recipes and the Neapolitan pizza dough is sooo good. The recipe calls for minimal ingredients and it is so easy to make. Prepare it and forget it-for at least 6 hours. I made the dough in the morning and used it for dinner. My parents were impressed with the pizzas that came out of this oven and I see more pizza gatherings in our future! All in all, yes, it is an expensive oven that cooks one thing, but it will be money well spent with the quality and convenience of making pizza at home. This photo was the only one we took (my 10 year old son’s cheese pizza). The crust was thin on the inside and nice and “bubbly” on the outside. There was nice spotting and char.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from First pizza created....PERFECT!!!! I saw this demonstrated at a WS in Las Vegas back in January. Thought about it, cogitated and finally purchased it less than a month ago. The very first pizza I made....along with the second, and third and on and on......turned out perfect. An amazing machine that gives results as good and most times better than any restaurant I've been to. Once you've made the dough it can be refrigerated and kept for days. Just pull out a ball of the dough, shape it, apply a few toppings and in as little as 2 minutes you have a pizza that looks fabulous and tastes even better. Worth every red cent!!!

I have an outdoor brick oven and it is great but takes lots of practice to learn how to keep a consistent temperature that is consistent and hot enough. This makes the pizza making process so easy. I just wish it could make a pizza that was about 4 inches bigger. Then it would be perfect!

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such a great pizza oven This pizza oven is a nice size. I would say it's in between a microwave and a toaster oven. It is a bit heavy to carry. It comes with a pizza pan w/detachable handle, a pizza peel and a pizza stone. The pizza pan is nice and heavy. You should season it a few times with veggie oil. The oven has a nice beep when it has reached a temp you set it to; not too loud at all. There are vents on the side. There is also a magnetic guide if you want to personalize and make your own pizza rather than their settings. That is a nice feature too. You don't have to wait too long for it to reheat before putting in another pizza to bake. We love thin crusts and they came out great! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

  • Can the oven be placed on top of quartz countertops? Or does it get too hot that it can damage the material?

    The Breville® BPZ800BSS Pizzaiolo™ does get hot on the outside. While it has not marked or damaged any of the surfaces that it has been tested on, to err on the side of caution, you can place counter top protectors beneath the oven.

    Can this take the place also as a countertop "Toaster Oven" or does it only go on very high temperatures such that heating other foods that one would use a toaster oven for, would not be a good idea?  (trying save on counter space)

    Although this pizza oven is designed primarily for baking pizza , it has independent manual temperature controls for both the deck and top (ambient) temperatures and the temperatures are variable from a max of 750 degrees F. , down to 300 degrees F. The problem is that in order to concentrate those very high pizza baking temps. it's got very little space between the pizza and the top heating elements, so it's NOT a replacement for a countertop "Toaster Oven", except for any food that can fit, like roasting and charring many veggies and and also baking flatbreads, or searing meats that aren't too thick. like steak or hamburgers.

    This great oven is designed for roasting many vegetables at very high temperatures, as well as pizza, and you can get very good charring with it. People have been posting pics of incredible roasted and charred veggies. It's also great for baking any flatbreads.

    I am considering this oven and it appears some of the stones crack. In the 2 videos on the WS website it shows the pizzas going directly on the deck with no stone. When should a stone be used and when should the pizza go directly on the deck?

    The Active Deck IS the stone! That's precisely why you place the pizza directly on it. It's made of cordierite, with a black glaze coating. That information is right on Breville's website about the features of this great pizza oven. Evidently Williams-Sonoma thinks you can bake a great pizza without a pizza stone.

    Can you use parchment paper in this oven?  The raw dough gets stuck on the pizza peel.

    Sprinkle semolina flour onto the peel and the dough will easily slide right off the peel no sticking. If dough sticks add more semolina flour

    Hi Esther, Unforunately, we do not have the dimensions of the inside of the Smart Oven Pizzaiolo Pizza Oven. The heating elements in the oven have a circular layout to them, thus the best shape for use would be a round pan about 11” round and no taller than 1.75”. If you wanted to try using a square pan, we would recommend a 10” x 10” pan no taller than 1.75”. The pan that is included with the oven is just shy of 12” round and is about 1.75” tall. It is made out of carbon steel which has extreme high heat tolerance. If using a non-carbon steel pan, ensure that the oven temperature setting is not above 450-500 degrees Fahrenheit as to not damage that pan and/or affect its nonstick coating.

    Hi Carrie, The oven takes 20 minutes to heat up but there's not a wait time from pizza to pizza. As soon as you take one out, you can put another one in.
