Martinis these days are preferably stirred, not shaken. In the past, experts have differed on this point, so although this recipe calls for stirring the drink, you might want to experiment with shaking it.


  • 3 fl. oz. vodka or gin
  • 1 Tbs. dry vermouth
  • 1 green cocktail olive or 1 lemon twist, for garnish


Pour the vodka and vermouth into a mixing glass two-thirds full of ice cubes. Stir well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add the desired garnish. Serves 1.
