Outdoor Rugs

It’s the details that transform a house – or an apartment – into a home. Artists carefully lay out every brush stroke to produce a breathtaking masterpiece. Well, you’re the artist, and your home is your blank canvas. Time to let your creative genius have some fun. And it’s OK to get excited, because Williams-Sonoma’s huge selection of furniture and decor offers unlimited design possibilities. All you need is some inspiration. Which accessories have the biggest impact on a space? Besides the essential furniture elements like dining tables and sectionals, interior decorators and designers usually pay a lot of attention to accent pieces like artwork, tables, light fixtures and rugs. And that goes for exteriors just as much as interiors. Here are some reasons why you should definitely think about incorporating an outdoor area rug into your home’s exterior layout.

A rug defines large spaces. If you have a big backyard patio or deck, it’s easy for things to get spread out. Rugs make it easy to create a harmonious space by outlining exactly what each spot is for – for example, where the dining table ends and the lounge area begins. Feel free to use several rugs throughout the patio if you want. They don’t have to be exactly the same, but their tones and style can match if you want some cohesion. That said, combining a solid rug in a neutral color with something bold is totally fine.

Consider using the strongest color in the place you want to draw attention to. If you have a large terrace with a grill, some chairs for conversing and a large dining table with space for several guests, use the most intense accent piece under the table. That becomes your exterior’s focus. Using bright blue, red, orange and black hues is a good way to turn heads.

Start by picking out a rug. If possible, choose your rug before selecting furniture. That might sound crazy, but it works. That’s because the rug you choose sets the mood for the whole space. It’s like having an espresso shot of your personality. Once you’ve got that, it’s really easy to find furniture that fits. Best of all, when you’re decorating, all you need to do is take a look at the rug to remember what kind of accent colors or styles to shoot for.

Create a bold look. Don’t be afraid to let people know who you are. After all, you’re outside. Vertical stripes? Exotic geometric patterns? Go for it.

Relax with natural tones. If your idea of the ideal backyard space is a place to unwind after a long day, choose an outdoor rug with softer colors instead. Light browns and grays – especially with a little bit of woven texture – transform a rooftop garden or backyard into a gentle oasis of tranquility. Use furniture made from solid teak and punctuate the space with dark accent tables to create your own spa. Now all you need is a masseuse.

To entertain friends in a chic, modern space, focus on clean lines and reflective surfaces. Glass and metal tables look gorgeous from all sides, highlighting your meal and making guests’ mouths water. Sleek surfaces are exciting and bring Milan to you. If you prefer afternoon cocktails instead of large sit-down invitations, consider armchairs and a coffee table instead. Either way, black and white motifs are definitely haute couture when it comes to rugs.

Not sure what size rug to go for? A lot of designers recommend going with the “bigger is better” formula. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that the entire table and the two front legs of all chairs are inside the rug’s dimensions. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the beauty of an area rug if you don’t have much space though. On a balcony, face two chairs towards each other with an accent table – and a small rug – in between them.
