Margo & Me

Jenny and Freddie, the creative couple behind the Margo & Me fashion blog, are inspired by all things Parisian. So, when they turned to Williams Sonoma Home to help reimagine their New York City apartment, they were dreaming of a modern, French-inspired entertaining destination. Lainey Hollis, head designer for Williams Sonoma Home, helped them achieve their new look with a sophisticated color palate and a thoughtfully designed space for entertaining and everyday living. Most important, it’s a place their adorable dog Margo approves of as well.

When Williams Sonoma Home head designer Lainey Hollis first heard about Jenny and Freddie’s vision of a modern Parisian-inspired space, she created a mood board to kick-off the design conversation. “We wanted to build a palette of light neutral colors and beautiful natural materials, accented with modern touches of black and brass,” says Hollis.

Next, the layout of the space had to fit the way Jenny and Freddie actually live. “We’re big entertainers but also love watching movies and playing the piano,” says Jenny. “The space has to easily lend itself to any of those things being the focus of the evening.” To get this effect, Lainey maximized seating while making the room feel open and inviting. The Yountville sectional sofa was the perfect fit for the space, and the faux suede performance fabric option made it ideal for the two dog owners.

Maximizing seating also meant adding chairs. Jenny and Freddie were immediately drawn to these modern yet inviting Montclair Swivel Chairs—as soon as they saw them they began spinning around in them with Margo on her lap. “The curved design lines in these chairs echoes the architectural elements in the room, so they were a natural choice,” says Lainey. In the center of the living space is the Pierre Coffee Table, a statement in travertine stone that fit the vision perfectly with a natural material and beveled detailing.

“It’s so important to incorporate what people love into their space,” says Lainey. To celebrate Jenny’s passion for playing the piano, Lainey created a focal wall around the piano. “The apartment has very high ceilings so we designed up above the piano in order to draw the eye in.” The framed photos make personal mementos prominent and the black abstract art echoes the color of the piano itself.

When Jenny comes home, the first thing she often does is place her bag down and take off her stylish shoes. So, they created an elegant space for her to do just that by using the Vienna Bar Cabinet. The top acts as a catch-all for the day’s wares while inside serves as storage for entertaining essentials like wine glasses and barware. It all speaks to the Parisian vibe as well—the mirror is one Jenny found in a Parisian market, and the bar cabinet is covered in faux shagreen, a material that first gained popularity in 1930s Paris.

The kitchen is open to the rest of the home, so every detail had to be both beautiful and functional. The Perennials Greek Key rug is designed for indoor and outdoor use, perfect for the kitchen of dog-owners since it is durable and can be easily wiped clean. “The overscale Greek key pattern in the kitchen rug makes a narrow space look bigger,” notes Lainey. The overall effect is a space that’s luxurious yet livable, perfect for a stylish couple like Jenny and Freddie.
