The pleasures of broiled grapefruit are akin to those of a classic crème brûlée, only here the hot caramelized topping gives way to cool, tart-sweet segments of citrus fruit instead of chilled custard. Any grapefruit will work in this recipe; just be sure the fruits are well chilled to produce the best results.

Ingredients:

  • 2 large grapefruits, well chilled
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 2 Tbs. unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 4 small fresh mint sprigs

Directions:

Preheat a broiler.

Cut each grapefruit in half crosswise. Cut a thin slice off the bottom of each half, if necessary, so that it will stand upright.

Using a serrated grapefruit knife or a small, sharp knife, loosen the grapefruit segments in each half by first carefully cutting between the fruit and the peel and then by cutting along either side of each segment to free it from the membrane. Leave all the segments in their shells. Place the halves upright in a baking dish.

In a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar, butter and cinnamon. Using your fingers, sprinkle the sugar mixture evenly over the grapefruit halves. Slip under the broiler about 4 inches from the heat source and broil until the sugar is uniformly bubbly, 2 to 3 minutes.

Transfer each grapefruit half to an individual dish and garnish with a mint sprig. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Grapefruit Brulee I have made this a few times now - with white and brown sugar - and both come out delicious. So easy to make and a great alternative if you don't have a blowtorch. This meets all my pregnancy cravings of sweet and sour.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly What I Was Looking For!! My daughter asked me to make some broiled grapefruit for a snack last night. I had only made it once before, and the recipe left a little to be desired. This recipe was exactly what we were looking for!! The description really says it all...it's like eating Creme Brulee with a fruity twist!! I highly recommend this recipe to anyone looking for a sweet & tangy treat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unique Salad or dessert course My grandmother was from Florida. When I inherited her silver service, there were 8 sterling silver grapefruit/citrus spoons in the sevice. My husband and I moved to Florida 20 years ago, and I was able to bring her service "home". In an effort to use them, I make this wonderful recipe for many dinner parties. I have used it as a salad, or second course, as well as a dessert course. My northern guests are always quite impressed. I am always delighted to honor my grandmother by using her service. Plus, I'm delighted to use the delicious grapefruits from our tree in the backyard!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for a quick & impressive dessert These are really good. I used pink grapefruit. The topping does taste like a creme brulee, but then you get that tang. Great mix of flavor. I like to make these for late night snacks.
