James Beard award–winning bartender Charles Joly is also co-founder of Crafthouse Cocktails, which makes the smoking box or smoking cloche you will need to give this winter drink its smoky flavor. Be sure to make a large ice cube or ice sphere for the drink at least several hours before you’re planning to serve it.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. (30 ml) cognac (preferably Pierre Ferrand 1840)
  • 1 oz. (30 ml) rye whiskey (preferably Wild Turkey 101 Rye)
  • 1 oz. (30 ml) sweet vermouth (preferably Punt e Mes)
  • 1/4 oz. (7 ml) Bénédictine
  • 1 dash Angostura Aromatic Bitters
  • 1 wide strip orange zest

Directions

In a mixing glass filled with ice, combine the cognac, rye, vermouth, Bénédictine and bitters. Using a bar spoon, stir well until thoroughly chilled. Strain into an old-fashioned glass with one large ice cube or sphere. Twist the orange zest strip over the drink to release its oils and drop the strip into the drink.

Using a Crafthouse Cocktail Smoking Box or a Mini Smoking Cloche and handheld smoker according to the manufacturer’s instructions, smoke the cocktail using a mixture of wood chips and ground cinnamon until the desired amount of smokiness is achieved. Serve immediately. Makes 1 drink.
