Keep a Gravy Boat on The Table Year-Round

In many homes, the gravy boat comes out for special occasions. Buck the convention and create a new signature in your home by keeping a boat available for weeknight meals or weekend brunches. The addition of a thick, flavorful sauce lends a touch of luxury and indulgence to your daily dining and everyday cuisine. Let yourself make storage space for more than one boat even. You can trade out looks the same way you switch the rest of your tabletop depending on the mood and the meal.

Making The Most of a Holiday Staple

Explore different ways to bring an upbeat feel to your table by looking to the touch points of holiday seasons when meals are exciting and hold surprises for your family or guests.

  • Select a clear glass bowl so everyone can see the texture of what you've created. Prepare for mouths to water when they know what's coming.
  • Choose a gravy boat with an included warmer. This charming base holds the boat aloft and has a small opening where you can place a tea light. The flame of the little candle keeps the gravy warm, like a catering pan.
  • Upgrade the look of the entire table with a copper boat. Pair it with other copper tabletop accessories, like a butter dish for a harmonious sense of warmth.
  • Create a polished atmosphere by selecting a high-shine option or one with a filigree or other decorative handle. If you use a plain white pourer most of the time, bring this one out for special occasions. A plain white separator lets you make more of a statement with special gravies.

Deciding Whether or Not To Use a Spoon

There exists an interesting debate around the use of a spoon with a gravy boat.

As with most dining table rules, you can choose to stay strict and make sure everyone at the table follows your lead, or you can simply set up a few cues and see what makes everyone comfortable, which has a lot of mannerly merit as a concept, anyway.

  • If you want your dinner guests to use a spoon, be sure to put out a spoon. Place it near the boat and ensure it has a small plate on which to rest. If you have a large table, put a spoon on a plate on each side of the boat.
  • If you prefer to let people pour directly from the boat, just put a napkin or trivet under it. Your guests are bound to pick up on the idea. You could place a pitcher of water at the table, too, to cue others to pour at will.
  • Be prepared to clean up a bit anyway. Have napkins on hand. Be ready to blot out a drip or two from your tablecloth. It's possible for an entire table to use a gravy boat without spills, but gravy is an intrinsically drippy affair.

Discover how rich meals feel with the simple addition of a well-loved gravy boat.
