Setting the Table with Korean Dinnerware

South Korean cuisine is a great choice for a family-style dinner party. Instead of a traditional centerpiece, the main meal and side dishes will sit in the middle of the table for guests to serve themselves. If you have a small table, a Korean meal can also be served buffet style, using a nearby counter or table to display the food. Though the main ingredients are generally quite simple (grains, fresh vegetables and meat like beef or pork), the food is flavored with sweet and spicy seasonings and marinades that your guests are sure to enjoy.

Setting the table for this type of family-style meal requires a different selection of tableware than what is typically used for a plated meal. The Korean dinnerware collection at Williams Sonoma includes plates, bowls, linens and Korean chopsticks so you can properly set the table for a family-style Korean meal.

Korean Dinnerware

Though there are many possible variations, a typical Korean meal will feature steamed short-grain rice, a hot soup or stew and an assortment of meat and vegetable side dishes. You will need a large serving platter for the rice and a large mixing bowl for the soup or stew. The side dishes can be placed in smaller bowls and refilled as needed. Sophisticated terracotta dishes in dark colors like navy or black are a great choice for the serveware. You can also place a matching charger plate at each place setting.

Each guest will require a dinner plate and a soup bowl. You can keep it simple with a basic white dinner plate and bowl or choose patterned plates and bowls featuring abstract patterns or botanical prints. For cutlery, each guest should have a soup spoon and a set of Korean chopsticks.

Place a pretty patterned water goblet at each place setting along with a wine glass if you'll be serving alcohol. As tea is also a popular Korean beverage to enjoy with a meal, consider setting the table with a vintage porcelain teapot and a set of matching teacups.

Korean Table Linens

Finish off your table setting with a few beautiful linen items to add color and texture. Seoul Fan placemats feature a gorgeous botanical design inspired by Korean ceramics. These placemats pair beautifully with white dinner plates. Matching Seoul Fan dinner napkins add elegance to your Korean table.

Enjoy delicious South Korean cuisine in style with Korean dinnerware from Williams Sonoma. Use these lovely plates and serving bowls to perfectly showcase the different side dishes, then add accessories like stainless steel Korean chopsticks and printed napkins to complete your table setting.
