Starting out from scratch as a newbie in the kitchen can be a cool experience. With a little trial and error, you can figure out what you like best and what recipes are simple to throw together. Having a cookbook or two is a simple way to peruse recipes and get familiar with measurements and ingredients. Try some ethnic cuisine, holiday recipes and something that varies from the norm. Cooking is never boring and has endless opportunities for the cook. Cookbooks with pictures are especially helpful to see what the finished product should look like. The classic cookbooks that have been around for a long time are suitable to get some solid foundation. Trendy new fad cookbooks are good for trying new things. The container can double as a hot water bath pot or as a vase when necessary. Keep the supplies on your counter near the stove for convenience.

Add a whisk to your kitchen tool collection. A whisk is essential for stirring gravies, scrambling eggs and blending cake ingredients. Be sure you have a pie pan or two. There will many occasions when a pie is just what your family wants. Fluted pans allow you to crimp the edges for the appearance of a homemade crust. Pies can be served at dinner parties, covered dish dinners or as a hospitable welcoming a new neighbor. The pie pans work well for baking quiches and soufflés too.

A mortar and pestle is ideal for making pesto, blending spices or mincing garlic. An assortment of mixing bowls is next on the list. Whether the bowls are made of copper, stainless steel, ceramic or glass, they are made to last. Many chicken salads, mashed potatoes, cake mixes and dips will pass through these bowls through the years. Varying sizes are handy and most are stackable for easy storing.

For seafood lovers and pescatarian diets, there are many cooking tools geared to fish. Seafood crackers and picks are good for crab legs. Grilling is a healthy way of cooking since any grease drips down through the grates. It also makes for fun entertainment when guests gather around the grill. Any new cook benefits from a cast-iron skillet for many reasons. These pans are incredibly durable and often last as long as the cook does. A little iron is actually absorbed in the food, so you get some nutritional value from the skillet. Cast-iron is ideal for cooking vegetables on a grill.
