Behind the Design
In the 16th to the 19th century, the Portuguese began using azulejos (painted tiles) to
decorate important buildings such as churches, public buildings and the homes of the
wealthy. The tiles were often used on the façade of buildings telling elaborate stories
from Portuguese history. The tile was originally imported from Delft, but in the late
1600s the king of Portugal banned all imports of azulejos, forcing Portuguese artists
to begin to create their own blue and white tile designs.

The Story of Our
Cataplana Pan
A specialty of Portugal's
southern province of Algarve,
"cataplana" refers both to
savory stews and the vessels
traditionally used to prepare
them. Our hand-hammered
copper cataplana features the
classic shell shape, which
circulates heat while basting
the food inside. This iconic pan
was among Chuck's original
finds – and appeared on the
cover of one of our earliest
Williams Sonoma catalogs.
