How to Choose a Bedroom Rug

Unless your bedroom is carpeted, a bedroom rug is a must have. Not only can it add color, pattern, and texture to your space, it will make the room more comfortable, which should be your primary goal when designing this relaxing retreat. Read on for a few quick tips on how to choose a bedroom rug.

How to Select the Right Rug Size for Your Bedroom

How to Select the Right Rug Size for Your Bedroom

In general, we recommend purchasing a rug that will fit under your bed, to anchor it, but if you like the look of a smaller area rug or runner on one or both sides of the bed—or even at the foot of the bed—that’s also an option.

For those who want a rug that anchors the bed, avoid 6” x 9” rugs, as they will be lost visually when placed under the bed footprint. An 8” x 10” rug is a good choice for a full- or queen-sized bed, as the bed will sit completely on the rug with plenty of room left on the sides or bottom, depending on placement. For a king bed, you’ll need at least a 9” x 12” for the bed to sit completely on the rug with room left on the side or bottom. In rooms where you are using large rugs, always keep 18” of the floor exposed from the rug to avoid the look of wall-to-wall carpeting. Remember that the size of the room determines the size that will work best.

Bedroom Rug Design

There are countless bedroom rug designs to choose from, in every style under the sun. For the bedroom, aim for a plush rug with a medium to high pile, which will offer the most comfort. But if you prefer a more beach-inspired look, try a natural fiber rug such as sisal or jute. Hide rugs are a chic choice for more modern bedrooms, and look great layered over natural fiber rugs to score more softness underfoot.

Don’t forget to purchase a rug pad, as it increases the life of the rug and protects the floor underneath. A rug pad will also make your rug more comfortable underfoot.
