Summary

Everything is more fun with ice cream, and the easiest way to whip up a batch of velvety chocolate is with our all-natural ice cream starter. It derives its dark, rich character from premium Guittard cocoa, highlighted by a splash of Madagascar Bourbon vanilla. Simply mix with heavy cream and half-and-half, pour into your ice cream maker and freeze. Customize with favorite mix-ins like chocolate chips, chopped nuts, crushed cookies or candy sprinkles. In about 30 minutes, you’ll enjoy sweet, creamy ice cream.

  • 15.4 oz. (contains two individually sealed packets; each makes 1 quart premium ice cream).
  • Made in USA.

Chocolate Ice Cream Dessert Recipe

To make the bittersweet chocolate ice cream, put the chocolate in a bowl. Set aside.

In a saucepan, whisk together 3/4 cup of the sugar, the cocoa powder and salt until blended, then whisk in the half-and-half. Set over medium heat and heat until bubbles form around the edges of the pan, 5 to 7 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and the remaining 1/4 cup sugar until blended. Slowly add the half-and-half mixture, whisking constantly until fully incorporated.

Put the mixture in the top pan of a double boiler set over but not touching simmering water in the bottom pan. Cook, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until a finger drawn across the back of the spoon leaves a path, about 10 minutes; do not allow the custard to boil.

Pour the custard through a fine-mesh sieve set over the bowl holding the chocolate and whisk until the chocolate is melted. Stir in the vanilla. Place the bowl in a larger one filled halfway with ice and water and let cool, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes. Refrigerate until chilled, at least 1 hour.

Transfer the custard to an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions. Spoon the ice cream directly from the ice cream maker into the wells of a mini-heart silicone baking mold; fill each well halfway and press firmly on the ice cream. Place in the freezer.

To make the semisweet chocolate ice cream, put the chocolate in a bowl. Set aside.

In a saucepan, whisk together the half-and-half, 1/2 cup of the sugar and the salt until blended.

Spoon the semisweet chocolate ice cream on top of the frozen layer of bittersweet chocolate ice cream and press firmly. Freeze for at least 3 hours.

To serve, invert the mold and pop out each dessert onto a plate. Makes about 24 heart-shaped desserts.

  • Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding I read the reviews and thought, no way can this be as good as everyone is posting here. Was I ever wrong and so happy to be wrong. I bought the chocolate (which is the first one we've tried), strawberry, caramel, vanilla and peach. I mixed it according to the instructions using the half & half and heavy cream. It's the best chocolate ice cream I've ever tasted. It's a rich full bodied chocolate. It turned out rich and creamy, so much better than any store bought ice cream. WS currently has the starter on sale and I have stocked up on most of the flavors although the peach is no longer available here. I'm trying the s'mores instead. I would highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superior Ice Cream! I've tried three of the flavors of W-S ice cream starter. The best is the chocolate: creamy, flavorful, very good texture. Far better than any store bought ice cream. The directions are accurate, and the mix of cream and half and half are properly proportioned. The vanilla is good, the caramel is a little sweet, but the chocolate is excellent. I add toasted coconut and pecans in the last five minutes of mixing for additional interest. Freezing in the W-S storage tub takes about 5 - 6 hours. You can also freeze in a covered stainless steel bowl and that takes about 4 hours. I have purchased more and will use frequently.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Easy to make and good tasting Made this for my brother and I and it is really yummy. Very easy too. If you like ice cream soft (not runny soft), then eat it right after it is finished and if you want it a little firmer, then put it in the freezer. Either way it is good. Highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Creamy and Chocolatey I've tried a few of the Williams-Sonoma ice cream starters and have been pleased with them all so far. They've all been creamy, just make sure that you fully dissolve the mix before putting into your machine. Flavors have always been nicely present - not too light, but not overly strong. I'm wondering if anyone has tried using the starter with alternative dairy products like coconut or almond milk?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rich and Decadent We prefer to eat this ice cream with strawberries. The flavor is definitely strong, but in a very good way! Definitely made for chocolate lovers. Would definitely recommend.
