Savor the rich, meaty flavor and delicate texture of homegrown shiitake mushrooms. Grow them indoors or outdoors with little effort and no mess using our hand-cut hardwood log, which is inoculated with spores that produce a crop of organic shiitake mushrooms every two to three months for possibly two to three years. Simply soak the log in water to start the growing process, and you’ll be ready to harvest in just a few weeks. Shiitake mushrooms are delicious in everything from stir-fries and soups to pasta dishes and stews.
- Logs are hand-cut and inoculated with shiitake mushroom spores in visible drill holes that are covered in cheese wax.
- Logs can be stood upright or laid horizontally for growing.
- Metal plaque on underside of log states date of inoculation.
- Fruiting occurs approximately sixteen weeks from inoculation.
- You can start the growing process and enjoy your first crop within a few weeks of delivery.
- Just soak the log for 24 hours in cold water, mist it occasionally, and watch your crop emerge.
- 12" long, approx. 3"–6" diam.
- 4–7 lb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NewYork2786342 from Takes longer than it says, but grew a lot I believe it took me three months of soaking the log every two weeks to produce any mushrooms, but after that I started to grow quite a lot of mushrooms. I used a heavy object to hold the log down so it was submerged in the water while soaking. I used BRITA filtered water (I have the filter attached to my sink) to remove chlorine from the tap-water I used to soak the log (chlorine kills mushroom spores - don't use unfiltered chlorinated water); you can also buy distilled water, but the filtered water was easier for me and cheaper. I live in a dry area. I used a large plastic container with a cover to keep the log relatively humid (the instructions also suggest a plastic bag). I had to keep my log and mushrooms in the covered container or else they dried out and stopped growing (my home is dry). The instructions say to remove the plastic bag after a time, but I had to keep my log covered at all times to keep it humid (against the instructions - but my home is dry). I also kept my log and container indoors at all times; I live in an area with very cold winters, and there's no way it would grow outside for me in winter. It was fun for a while, but I got bored of it after about 1 year, and I gave it to my friend. My friend contained growing the mushrooms herself for a long time (the log lasts 3 years or longer, so my friend got at least 2 years out of it herself). It's a great idea to buy this if you cook with mushrooms or as a fun science activity/experiment for your kids (or your classroom if you're a teacher).Date published: 2017-12-17Rated 1 out of 5 by oluh from Question I bought this log, we soaked it once, there is a tiny hole next to it with a pile of what appears to be saw dust, does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here? Did it come with a termite?Date published: 2017-07-12Rated 1 out of 5 by JenJass from Tried for a year and only got 2 mushrooms I followed the directions for a year and only got 2 mushrooms total. It's a lot of work for no payout which left me really bummed. I had such high hopes because I love mushrooms but this really ended up being a waste of money.Date published: 2017-05-11Rated 5 out of 5 by Tiffalina from Eat Shiitake I Love my mushroom log.
