- More about Romertopf
The clay roaster called a römertopf (“Roman pot”) was first introduced in Germany in 1967, its design inspired by centuries-old clay pot cooking methods. Made with natural clay deposits unique to the region, the covered pots are prized for their ability to produce exceptionally moist, tender braises and roasts. The traditional clay baker offers a simple, efficient way to slow cook foods in their natural juices.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Ana41 from Can only fit a very small chicken I have a larger Romertopf that is unglazed and I thought this was the same size only glazed. The one is smaller. I placed a 4.4 pound chicken in it (soaked top and bottom for 30 minutes) with carrots and potato wedges. No liquids were added. It was not enough room. I ended up stuffing the cavity with potatoes, carrots and lemon slices. I placed the lid over it and it was not a snug tight fitting fit. I thought it would be ok. It wasn’t. The juices overflowed and made a mess on the floor of the gas oven. I took it out after 1 hr 45 minutes (having placed it in a cold oven and set the temp to 450 degrees). This size will work great for those free range naturally raised chickens that feed 2 people. The chicken tasted fine. I still had to use baking soda to scrub the top and the bottom half had burnt chicken juices on the sides, a bit difficult to remove. I wish WS sold the larger size, I would buy that. I’ll go back to my unglazed Romertopf (made in Mexico and 10 years old) until I can order a larger glazed one. I only use this for roasting a chicken in the oven. The lid handle crushed onto the chicken while it baked and this is a problem. Not happy with this since I can’t use a 4-5 pound for my family’s needs.Date published: 2018-07-23Rated 1 out of 5 by Jane1lev from Very disappointing I am very sorry I purchased this product. It did impress me with the outcome. I tried the bread recipe 4 times and did not produce a good loaf.Date published: 2018-06-12Rated 5 out of 5 by WindyW from The best roaster for chicken & turkey ever! My first clay baker was given to me as a wedding gift purchase at Williams Sonoma over 30 yrs ago. Fall off the bone, golden chicken & turkey with the most wonderful moist flavor for sure. There will be plenty of drippings and juice at the bottom for a fabulous amount of gravy! My family & friends all talk about my meal afterwards. Since then I have baked hundreds roasting chickens and many Thanksgiving turkeys in my pot. Plus I have ordered several different sizes offered elsewhere. I have also given them away to friends as gifts over the years with great success. I still have the original pot and as long as you clean it and treat it like gold it works every time. Clean with Baking Soda and a brush, rinse well and it will treat you good for a long time. My clay pots are my prize possessions. ***Make sure you soak your pot in clean water at least 15 - 30 min, I always go 30 minutes. ***Always place in cold oven and do not allow oven to get past 425 degrees in temp.Date published: 2017-02-01Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from yes veryvery very good Baked every thing ham shanks um! Baked chicken is very moist Ribs is great and roast Beef pork or lamb all is just moistDate published: 2015-10-05Rated 5 out of 5 by rainboeyes from Best Clay Baker Ever! I learned to cook with clay bakers over 20 years ago. Now I will not bake without one. I have also gifted daughters AND daughters-in-law with this clay baker. The method is SO easy, and there are never any surprises when you open the top. Wonderful odors permeate the entire home and everyone cannot wait until the meal is served. I personally own several sizes. Since all the kids are grown and gone with families of their own, I tend to use the smaller clay bakers more often. This is perfect for roasts, chicken, turkeys, vegetables... just soak the lid while putting your edibles in the bottom, cover, and wait for a delicious dinner. NEVER preheat the oven. You will cook at a lower temperature, as well. Everything comes out tender and tasty. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing this super pot!Date published: 2014-05-30
