This smaller version of the popular Philips Pasta Maker has a compact footprint, so it can be stored easily on the countertop or in a cabinet. The fully automated machine makes perfect pasta from scratch in just a few minutes. It comes with three discs for shaping spaghetti, fettuccine and penne. I purchased the lasagna & angel hair discs, and pappardelle and tagliatelle discs separately and haven't had any issues with any. It makes beautiful angel hair pasta. The other day I made spinach carrot pasta with store bought tomatoes sauce (Fresh Thyme) for my family and it was delicious! I made a double batch in the machine (300 grams Bob's Red Mill semolina flour, 100 grams King Arthur organic all purpose flour, 2 large organic eggs, enough water added to the "liquid beaker" to measure 150). Make sure you pour carefully the liquid beaten mixture; you may not need to add all of it because you don't want the dough too moist nor too dry. It should be soft and NOT STICK to the inside of the machine. I cooked for 4 minutes for the spaghetti. I used jarred pesto because that's all I had in the pantry. It was delicious! I prefer pasta made with semolina flour with fresh eggs and some all purpose flour in the mix. It took longer to boil the water than to make the pasta! My whole family loved it! It was very quick and easy. As far as cleaning goes, since the dough was not too moist it was very easy to wipe out the bits of pasta and use the provided tool to clean out the dough BEFORE handwashing any of the parts. If you're struggling to get the pasta dough out of crevices and what not, your pasta dough was too wet. Another tip suggested by Phillips is to add a bit of olive oil to the eggs before adding water to the "liquid beaker." I'll try that next time. I don't oversalt my pasta water either but I do pour 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil in the boiling water pot. I went to youtube and found to use 2 cups regular all purpose flour. Simple. In the other cup, mix two eggs and enough water to equal 160cc (marked on the cup). Have your cheaters on, because the 160 line is almost impossible to see. Flour goes in the maker and the machine goes on the automatic setting. Press play/pause button and the maker starts turning the flour. Egg/water mixture goes in the holes in the top as the flour turns and the machine creates the dough. Once the machine senses the dough is ready it starts pushing out the pasta! That's it! Note: There is no salt in the recipes in the book that comes with the maker, but make sure you salt your water a decent amount. I put a little less then 1/4 cup salt for the larger batch of the recipe in the water. Delicious! love this product! Bought one for my mother in law and mother! Since I was a guest, I ordered the cheapest dish on the menu, which was a plain pasta with tomatoes and fresh basil. (Usually, I order fancier pasta, with shrimp, for example- something to make the pasta spectacular.) But this was actually the best pasta I've ever had- the fresh pasta and sauce made all the difference. When I returned home, I immediately ordered a pasta attachment for my Kitchen Aid mixer, and a machine to make fresh tomato sauce. What a royal pain! I made pasta once (for more than $100 for the attachment) and I was DONE! I thought this machine might give me the results I had hoped for without the hassle...no such luck. It comes with only 3 pasta shapes, unfortunately, and I didn't want to pay double the price for more shapes, so I thought I'd make do. I frequently use small pasta like macaroni, oriechette, etc., for soups and pasta salads. I thought the penne feature on this machine would suffice...but no! The penne is very dense and chewy; I actually prefer dried pasta to this for soup and pasta salads. The spaghetti and fettuccine come out fine (and I love that I can use my own organic flours). But, as I'm now seeing in other reviews, there is a LOT of waste! Definitely NOT a pound of pasta! Very small portion. You can see the problem as the machine works: the dough, which should be propelled to the front of the machine for extrusion, gets stuck in the back and so cannot be extruded. I cannot tell you how many times I've had to stop the machine , and physically remove the dough, and place it in the front of the machine, and force it into the extruder. I have to do this several times throughout the process. And while doing this, sometimes the mixing compartment becomes detached from the machine and it is HARD to set it back in. I have, unfortunately, used the Lord's name in vain countless times while trying to make pasta. And it always leaves a lot of unused dough leftover, no matter how many times I stop the machine and put the dough into the extruder. And cleaning it? Seriously! This alone is daunting! You have to disassemble a bunch of parts and wash/scrub them individually, and the discs that form the pasta are eternally clogged. You have to manually poke through each hole multiple times to remove the dough, and that is AFTER soaking! For the penne disc, for example, there are 3 holes for each piece of pasta, so you have to poke through a LOT of holes to clean it, which totally negates this machine as a time-saver. I have come to LOATHE making pasta, but continue to do so to justify the price, and the fact that I BEGGED my husband to buy this for me because FRESH PASTA IS THE BEST! Ha! The process is very quick (~10 min), and the pasta quality is good, given that there isn't really a kneading process to develop the gluten. One thing that I do not like is that about 15% of the ingredients that you put in do not end up being in the pasta. They form clumps and stick to/remain in the inside of the container. Philips designs an extra extrusion setting for this situation, but it does not help much. If this is not a concern to you, then I think this machine will serve you well.Date published: 2017-03-20
