Miele CM6 Thermal Carafe
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ike71 from Outstanding automatic machine with great crema! I purchased the CM6310 (prior model to 6350 w/out coffee pot feature) two years ago to replace a 10 yo DeLonghi Magnifica. My DL was starting to leak and act up, so I knew it was time to replace the oh-so-loud DL. I do not like my coffee scalding hot, but my partner used to microwave his coffee after making it in the DL because it wasn't hot enough. DL makes a nice machine, but I did not feel it was worth the price of the new units, so I began my quest for a new machine. I mainly considered Saeco, Jura, and Miele, quickly eliminating Saeco due to reviews - many people are happy with them, but I kept reading about reliability issues and felt they were not up to par with Jura and Miele. I finally compared the Miele with several Jura models and found that you could not take out the brewer on the Juras to clean them, and, no matter how much you run the automatic cleaning programs, you should manually clean periodically, so I went with the Miele. My first impressions with the Miele were how quiet it was compared to the DL, how quickly it heated up from turning on to making first cup, and how much stronger it could make coffee, with a rich, full crema. The DL could not really make a coffee or Americano by itself - one had to pull hot water separately and add a shot or two of espresso. The Miele does all of this by itself. One only needs to adjust the settings of the coffee and create a personalized profile, and you're all set for one-button automatic brewing of espresso, coffee, cappuccino or latte macchiatos. Other drinks, such as, cafe latte, ristretto or lungo require hitting a secondary menu button first. For a larger cup, or what some call an Americano, I use the Lungo setting which basically brews a normal-sized coffee, but one can set it to brew quite strong with excellent crema. I leave the regular coffee setting (one-touch) to brew a stronger, slightly smaller cup. Four one-press brewing options (espresso, coffee, cappuccino, latte macchiato) are available on the front panel, all of which may be customized (strength, temp, volume, pre-brew off/short/long) to individual profiles. Additional programs are accessed under a second menu, including: ristretto (concentrated espresso w/ less water), lungo (larger coffee), cafe latte, hot milk, milk froth, hot water. If you prefer a more 'normal' coffee as your go-to daily drink, you could easily customize the coffee button to dispense the same amount as a lungo in order to avoid having to use the secondary menu. The bean container holds exactly one 8.8-ounce can of Illy beans and has a seal that helps reduce noise. At first I thought this may keep the coffee fresh, but I don't think so because the inside of the machine is not sealed; however, I tend to place a whole can in the bean container until it runs out and have not noticed a problem with old beans. There is a hatch for ground beans on top of the unit, which I use for an occasional decaf, since I tend to keep the bean container full of regular beans. Using grounds is easy, but you are limited to using one scoop of grounds, and this is not quite as strong as you can make it with beans, so I prefer using beans. Milk drinks are very simple, just add milk to the thermos and attach the tube to the cappucinatore. Lattes, cappuccinos and latte macchiatos are fully automatic and quite impressive to watch brew. The latte macchiatos come out perfectly layered with the espresso on bottom followed by warm milk and then froth on top. The machine goes through a rinse cycle as it heats up each time you turn it on, just like my old DL, however, the Miele heats up extremely quickly. It also performs a rinse before turning off, and a more involved rinse program if you used milk. Some reviewers have complained about this, but I don't mind - it is doing work that I don't have to! Due to the rinse cycles, you may have to refill the 62 oz (7.5 cup) water reservoir more frequently, but, again, compared to other machines, this is normal. My only suggestion to Miele is to add more one-touch options to the front panel, for I often use hot-water for tea or use the lungo program, but this is quite minor. The quality of the espressos, coffees and lattes is amazing and I think this machine works perfectly with the Illy dark roast (now called Intenso). Pros: - OUTSTANDING COFFEE DRINKS - better than your barista makes - extremely fast heat-up, power-on to first cup - very quiet compared to DeLonghi - much hotter brewing temperature ability than DL - full, ruch crema on all coffees and espressos - customizable profiles - relatively easy to clean, including manual cleaning of brewing system and cappucinatore Cons: - none without being too picky, but I wouldn't mind seeing two more one-touch options: lungo & hot waterDate published: 2019-07-18Rated 3 out of 5 by Rong from Love it, but repairs are difficult! We’ve had our Miele for 1-1/2 years and absolutely love the coffee and extra features for making specialty coffee. 3-1/2 weeks ago it quit pumping water. We contacted Williams-Sonoma and they gave us the name of a repair shop that does warranty work on Miele. We brought it in (100 mile trip for us). After two weeks of going around with the repair shop, Miele, and Williams-Sonoma, we were absolutely no closer to getting the repair done! Miele said they had to check the warranty and we needed to send a picture of the broken piece, but we no longer had our machine - it was 100 miles away at a repair shop! Very long story made shorter, we are STILL waiting to hear from Miele almost a month later! And after driving the machine 100 miles to the repair shop, Miele said we were misinformed by Williams-Sonoma as to how to handle our broken machine! As it stands now, Miele said they will probably just send us a new machine if they can’t “help us fix it over the phone!” I don’t know how you fix a broken piece over the phone?! We have waited DAYS/WEEKS to be contacted by Miele to resolve this. Both the repair shop and Williams-Sonoma have said they would try contacting the “higher ups” to get this resolved. Very disappointed in Mieles customer service!! Overall, I would still recommend this machine, but be prepared with patience if it breaks Down!!Date published: 2018-09-18Rated 5 out of 5 by jthtjb01 from I love this machine! I studied/reviewed all espresso machines before buying this one and this machine does it all. You can make adjustments to your specific taste. It fits on my counter perfectly. Accept the fact that grinding beans is noisy regardless of the best machine. Yes, it rinses OFTEN, but why complain, this keeps the machine clean and running smoothly; something most people never do even though required by the manufacturer to do regularly. Degreasing requires a few minutes of your time; however the machine does the work while you empty the waste water. There is no guess work with this machine as it tells you when it needs you to adjust water levels and add tablets for descaling and degreasing. User friendly. My advice is, if you don't want to properly care for your investment, why invest? You can always go out and buy your morning "cuppa jo" prepared especially for you and bring it home; but that is certainly not the same as becoming your own "Barista" brewing your favorite freshly ground Cafe Americano, Cappuccino, Latte or Latte Macchiato at home. I am quite smitten with this machine and you will be, too.Date published: 2018-05-29Rated 5 out of 5 by dflawless from I love my Miele! I've had this about 6 months and love my Miele espresso machine. I like that everyone in the family can have their own profile with custom drinks. The screen prompts you to do everything and she is very user friendly to use. I love the milk rinsing after every use. The "double" button gets a lot of use in my house too. You can make a 12 oz. cappuccino with one touch.Date published: 2018-05-29
