- More about Mauviel
In 1830, Ernest Mauviel established his namesake cookware company in Villedieu-les-Poêles in Normandy. The village had a long history of outstanding metalwork; the locals were considered experts in the craft. Today, much of the manufacturing is still done by hand using traditional processes passed down through generations of copper makers. True to France’s rich culinary history, Mauviel 1830 is a favorite in professional kitchens, where copper’s quick, even heat conductivity is essential for making delicate sauces and other French classics. Mauviel now also offers stainless-steel collections crafted with the same attention to detail as its traditional copper cookware.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Bishmic from Beautiful and fast boil I have had my lovely Mauviel copper kettle for about 5 months. It does not whistle, which is totally fine for me, as I am usually in my kitchen while it heats. I have used Copperbrill on it once and it shined as it should. It has maintained its shine ever since, albeit there are water spots which is to be expected (but shining it removes these spots). When the kettle arrived, it needed to be shined so I used salt and vinegar (I think that's the concoction) because I had not yet received the Copperbrill. It shined it nicely and I haven't seen any brass at all. Copper is very sensitive, though...so if you don't want the upkeep, this kettle probably isn't going to fit into your lifestyle. I have inspected the inside and there are no rusty parts or anything corroding - but I pour all water out of it so the water will not sit and cause any potential damage. I also do not use filtered water, I use tap water. The handle also gets hot (I use a gas stove) so I purchased a pot holder designed for the handle. I waited to get this kettle because it was expensive (for me, anyway) and I am so glad I purchased it. It's BEAUTIFUL on my stove and I stare at it quite often. I look forward to using it every day. It looks just like the picture on the website.Date published: 2018-01-05Rated 5 out of 5 by Videlfau from Beautiful and functional I have been using this kettle for over a month now. I was concerned by some of the reviews but knowing the quality of the Mauviel cookware I decided to buy the copper kettle. The inside of the kettle is stainless steel so it cannot rust (note that I contacted Mauviel France to confirm that). If you see stains in your kettle it may come from deposit in your water or just the discoloration of the metal. The handle is warm but if you don't overheat the kettle (let the water boil for several minutes) you can grab the handle without protection. The kettle does not whistle but it is quite easy to spot the steam coming out of the spout. This is a large kettle and it is very mice to be able to prepare enough water for everybody's tea in the morning without to prepare a second kettle! I use my kettle everyday, I let the copper age because I like it but Mauviel sells a paste to keep the kettle shiny. I am extremely satisfied with this kettle and with William Sonoma Customer Service.Date published: 2017-08-14Rated 1 out of 5 by J90026 from RUST :( Loved the design and function of this kettle (do need a towel to hold when hot), but I found rust after just 1 week along interior bottom corner. This one's going back to W-S.Date published: 2017-06-03Rated 3 out of 5 by Dominick from Lovely Tea Kettle I have a lot of Mauviel and Ruffoni Copper in my kitchen. I love this kettle but hate it at the same time. It is horrible to polish. It never has a consistent finish on it. It is just getting old and tired looking and I only purchased it 2 months ago. Im thinking I will return it and buy the Staub. The Kettle handle heats up quickly as well and there is no whistler.Date published: 2017-04-18Rated 5 out of 5 by Missourian from Stainless Steel and made in France We purchased as a gift to us for Christmas 2016. It has proven itself to be all we thought it would be. No "rust", discoloration, or any other fault. Used regularly, left to stand on the stove with water. While cheaper pots are available this met our desires. Handle stays cool, lid locks, steam rises during pouring away from hand. One must admit 300 series stainless steel cookware is really quite hard to beat.Date published: 2017-04-15Rated 5 out of 5 by Alpha from Long term user report We bought the stainless steel version of the Mauviel kettle at the W-S South Portland store in October of 2015. There were no user reviews at that time and the final deciding factor was that this tea kettle was made in France rather than China where all the others are made. Our kettle is not showing any signs of rust. It has been holding water continuously for many months as we use it daily to heat water for tea or coffee. In the Winter it also sits on top of our wood stove as a humidifier. After I read the reviews here claiming that it quickly rusts internally I purposely emptied all the water and let it dry completely on our wood stove. I then examined the interior and wiped the seam area with a tissue. There was no rust color on the tissue afterwards. We use our own spring water which does not pass through steel pipes. I suspect that iron oxides from steel water pipes or other impurities may result in the "rust" claimed by other reviewers here. The second complaint made about this tea kettle is that the handle can be too hot. Not true in our case. I have always been able to hold the handle anywhere with my bare hand. I can imagine that if this kettle is used on a gas range with the heat turned up high then excess flames will over-heat the base of the handle. We use the kettle on a glass top electric range and the diameter of the kettle is always larger than the burner we use. Not a problem. We do not miss having a whistle on the spout. I have trained myself to pay attention to this kettle and watch for the puff of steam from the spout that indicates that water is boiling. I admit to ruining a prior kettle by forgetting to monitor the situation and letting all the water boil away. This kettle is too good for me to allow that to happen. My only initial issue with this kettle was that right after boiling water I may use up most of the boiling water and want to refill the kettle. The little handle on the cap can be too hot to handle with my fingers for about 5-10 minutes. I have to overcome my urge to quickly refill the tea kettle and wait a bit. The cap, by the way, fits very precisely and does not allow any steam to leak from it's rim. So overall we are very pleased with this French tea kettle.Date published: 2017-03-09Rated 1 out of 5 by Henrie from I had to return this beautiful tea kettle I loved this tea kettle and I bought it in copper. It really is beautiful, until you use it. After the second use the copper started coming off and it was brass. It was splotchy and pocked on the outside and on the inside it started to rust. I had to return it after 2 weeks. It really made me sad because it was really beautiful for a day.Date published: 2017-01-28Rated 1 out of 5 by ruxfils from unfortunate design from a quality company It seems this kettle has been designed purely to match the aesthetics of the mauviel line and is flawed on multiple counts of functionality. The description states that the handle remains cool and yet both the handle and the lid are scalding after a boil and require an oven mitt to handle. The kettle does not whistle. The kettle must be inverted almost completely in order to pour out its contents and the form of the handle makes this process difficult and uncomfortable with a single hand.Date published: 2016-05-24
