This luscious little dessert is the petite cousin of the kouign amann—a classic "butter cake" from pastry chef Jean Yves Charon's native Brittany. Each combines layers of puff pastry to create a decadent treat with a sweet, buttery center and crisp caramelized sugar coating. Handcrafted in Northern California, the kouignettes are easy to prepare—simply let them rise overnight, then bake and serve. They emerge from the oven with crunchy, sugar-speckled exteriors, tender interiors and an irresistible buttery aroma.

Receiving Instructions

  • The kouignettes were shipped frozen with dry ice, which may have evaporated during shipment. This is normal. Please take care not to touch any remaining dry ice with bare hands. Upon receipt, store the kouignettes in the freezer where it will keep, unopened, up to one month frozen. Once completely thawed, we do not recommend refreezing the kouignettes.


  • Generously spray 12 standard muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray. Place 1 kouignette in each well and cover the pan with a sheet of parchment paper. Let the kouignettes rise at room temperature until doubled in size, at least 7 hours or up to 12 hours.
  • Preheat an oven to 375°F.
  • Remove the top sheet of parchment paper. Transfer the pan to the oven and bake until the kouignettes are puffed and dark golden brown, about 18 minutes, rotating the pan 180 degrees halfway through baking. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool for 1 minute, then invert the kouignettes onto the rack. Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

At Williams Sonoma, we take great pride in the quality and craftsmanship of our products. Attention to design, materials, safety and construction are our priority. Upon receipt, please inspect your purchase and notify us of any damage; we will arrange for a prompt replacement.

If within 30 days, you are dissatisfied for any reason, you may return your purchase for a refund of the merchandise value. An original receipt or gift receipt is required for all returns and exchanges. Returns with a gift receipt will be refunded in the form of a Merchandise Credit for the amount indicated on the gift receipt. Returns with original receipt will be refunded in the original form of payment, cash and check refunds over $100 will be issued as a company check (may take 14 business days from time of request).

We cannot accept returns on monogrammed, personalized, special-order items, custom upholstery, food, items shipped direct from the vendor or on items damaged through normal wear and tear. Final sale items ending in .97 or .99 cannot be returned.

  • Rated 1 out of 5 by from Inedible... didn't even rise at all and no refund I bought these 2 months ago and kept them in freezer until use as instructed before expiration date. Very simple steps...left out to rise for 7 hours and bake for 15 mins at 375 degrees in buttered muffin tin. They did not rise at all. Sweet tasting hockey pucks. Williams Sonoma customer service just said ... "sorry nothing we can do for you" No refund, no credit not even an offer to send me a replacement batch. Do not order any frozen food items from them. You will waste your time and money.

You definitely have to plan in advance to make them because they need to basically sit out overnight to proof. They were pretty but they just didn't measure up for the price.

    Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing! After a week in Brittany last year tasting these at every bakery along the way, I was thrilled to see W-S carrying the mini version. Alas, as with others, mine arrived with a pool of sticky sugar syrup between the wrapping and the box. (Is it that the dry ice cannot keep them cold enough to avoid this?) I baked the first four according to package instructions. While they are tasty enough, they do not have the taste or texture of the originals. They are not even as good as the frozen Kouignettes at the major Kouignette chain store in France although they are about the same price. The second batch had me trying to doctor them up by buttering the pans heavily, then sprinkling a 1/2 tsp of turbinado sugar on the bottom of each muffin cup. I added the frozen dough, buttered the tops a tiny bit and added a small sprinkling of the sugar on top. The sugar and butter caramelized during the baking. This improved them, but the Breton originals have more sugar and butter, more layers as well. The extra sugar and butter bake into a caramel flavor that permeates the kouignette. Even my doctored version could not make up for the layers missing. So they are tasty enough with a definite yeasty taste that I find attractive, but they are far from the Kouign aman (larger version of Kouignettes) I ate in Brittany. Disappointed, but will finish the rest of the box.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection Placed 12 in a muffin pan, and left to thaw/proof in cold oven overnight. Baked as instructed on label. Could not have asked for a better result. Came out looking exactly as pictured on the site. Only issue I had was with stopping myself from eating too many, at one time! Thank you, Williams Sonoma, for providing this wonderful product. BTW, I rarely shop for food items online, and rarely write reviews. These are so good, had to let prospective buyers know. DO NOT hesitate to try these. Yes, only 4 in the 2nd photo, because that's all that are left of the dozen baked. Don't judge! Will diet tomorrow. :)

However, now that I've tried it, I'm really glad I bought them! They are easy to prepare, delicious, and the perfect size for a nice snack/dessert. We had no problems with the sugar and they came out beautifully. I would probably get these over the kouign amanns just because I like the size of these better.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yummy buns Product arrived in good condition - well packed. Very handy to have in the freezer. These puffed up very nicely overnight. Once baked they were crusty on the outside and nicely chewy and soft in the inside. Very slightly greasy but still good.

    Rated 2 out of 5 by from Will not purchase again... Same issue as many other reviews: a mess with the syrup and the sugar was nonexistent in the end. Also, the instructions say bake at 375 for 18 minutes. I tried that with one dozen and it was NOT good. I continued baking for longer but the inside just didn't bake as it should have. I baked the second dozen at 325 for 40 minutes and it was better, but I think I'll just go back to getting the croissants. The kouignettes aren't so special after all. Will not buy again. Did not appreciate those bad instructions, WS!
