Rated 5 out of 5 by Lorifran57 from Excellent I use these to bake Tarts and Pies. Easy to use easy to keep clean. I use tinfoil in the bottom to flatten maintain form and place the weights in it on top of tinfoil. This way the form is even and the weights never get dirty. I just take the tinfoil 'packet' out of the crust when done and let them cool. Then throw in a colander and rinse without soap even. Then lay them on a dry rack that I place on a big towel to catch the one or two that might be slightly smaller and come through. I found the Goldtouch roaster rack is small enough weave to hold them spread out for the afternoon to dry thoroughly. Just be careful cause one or so might come through but the towel will catch it and so won't roll away. When fully dry I put in a clean ziplock bag and not the net bag. That just a way to get them dirty. They work amazingly well.Date published: 2019-05-12Rated 2 out of 5 by rbv84 from Work Well, But Rancid Oil Smell I have had these pie weights for about 2 years. I have only used them a handful of times. They do work well to keep pie crusts from rising. However, my weights picked up a rancid oil smell, even though I put parchment paper down before adding the weights to my crusts. I have tried soaking them in a baking soda solution, a vinegar solution, and even a bleach solution (out of desperation). As a last-ditch effort, I tried baking them in high heat to remove the smell. What I am assuming was oil did start to come out of the weights, and they do not smell as bad as they did (I think...but maybe that's because they now just smell burnt), but now they are discolored. I'm sure they will still work the same, but I splurged to buy these over using dried beans because they were prettier, and now I am left with something that I'm not happy to use anymore. I might as well just buy some dried beans to put in the jar, because at least they will look better than my burnt, discolored, still slightly smelly ceramic weights.Date published: 2017-03-14Rated 5 out of 5 by Alltimebaker from Great for Pie Crusts I already have a jar of these weights but needed another one for a pie pan that is 12". They keep the crust from shrinking down the sides and helps the bottom to brown evenly by keeping it pressed down. I use foil cut into round shapes to lay on the uncooked crust and then add the weights to keep them from baking into the dough while cooking. As long as I'm careful, they should last for a good long time. I haven't had any of the smell issues mentioned by other reviewers. I wash them in hot water after they cool, let them dry for a good 24-48 hours and then put them back into the jar. Just don't make the mistake I did and fail to line the pie shell with foil or parchment the first time! I have washed them and air dried them after each use. I even washed them and heated them in water with vinegar to get the smell out. I am not sure if they all smell like this or if just a few smell like this. Maybe a bad batch. I air dried them for a week , but that did not work. For years I have made pies and poked lots of holes in the crust to keep it from puffing up. Not only is that in imperfect method, it also lets your filling seep through, rendering the crust soggy after a day or so. Finally, I found these! They were a very reasonable price, come in a lovely little storage jar, and they worked perfectly! I can use as few or as many as needed in my pies to hold down the crust, which is useful when making small crusts in my Breville Mini Pie Baker. The product works just as stated, but after 1 year mine smell awful. I generally bake pies at Christmas, so this year I pulled my weights out, and they smell just plain horrific. I washed them as directed last year before putting them in the cabinet, but now they stink to high heaven. I decided to put them in my crust anyway because I needed them, and instead of the sweet aroma of pie crust I had the foul aroma of these stinky ceramic weights.
