I love my Breville toaster and thought yes, I'd love to have it. I've had it for more than a year... and when it's good it is really good. But, I've never had to care for an appliance like I do this one. Without warning you will get a weak pot of coffee. And, when you really wanted a strong cup of coffee before starting your day - putting it down the drain and deconstructing your coffee pot to engage in 15 -20 minutes of messy cleaning is not what you have in mind. That happened today. I am waiting for the next pot to brew - which is sure to delight. I was even willing to ignore the ridicule from friends at the size of the machine - because I am a lover of good coffee. But, I need to move on. The heating element went out and was irreparable. I purchased a second unit only to have the same issues approximately a year later, so it would appear that the unit is only good for moderate use for a year. For this reason I decided to try the unit with a thermal carafe and found that again after about a year to 18 months the grinder become inoperable. The motor spins, but fails to grind beans. So, after about 4 years, I've gone through 3 coffee makers. I'm the only coffee drinker in my household and will use the coffee maker 3-4 times/week at most. For those who use their coffee makers daily, I would expect an even shorter lifespan. I'm back to using my trusty Cuisinart grinder and the pre-ground feature in my Breville for the time being. I've tried contacting Breville during the stated hours of operation from their website 8AM-5PM PACIFIC Time, only to find that their call center is open until 4:30PM EASTERN time. If we can't rely on the accuracy of their website, then how can we possibly rely on the value of their expensive products?????Date published: 2019-10-24Rated 4 out of 5 by Cardo from Great looking and functioning machine - but slow I read many of the reviews and most complained about the noise from the grinder, which is true, but let me add a little more depth. First of all, this is an extremely solid machine, built to the same standards as most Breville products, which is to say very heavy and good looking. It is quite tall, so be sure to measure appropriately to ensure it will fit beneath your cabinets. It took little time to set-up and I quickly dialed in the coffee to the maximum level of strength and also found ~375-435 ml as the optimal amount for a travel mug (with some room for milk). That's the beauty of this machine - you can use it for a travel mug, coffee mug or a carafe, the choice is yours. The machine then figures out the rest - how much coffee to grind, how long to let it steep, and then you have a strong and consistent cup of coffee. A few notes - yes, the grinder is loud, but it's no louder than any other grinder and does a good job. As with most home grinders, I'd highly recommend you not use oily beans (stick to most light or medium blends and you should be okay). Second, if you don't want to use the grinder, then you don't have to use it - you can instead just use pre-ground coffee and bypass the grinder like a normal coffee maker. The machine is a bit slow, but the count down timer is quite handy, with most cups taking 3-4.5 minutes. Yes, much slower than a "K-Cup" coffeemaker, but also vastly superior as it will 'steep' the coffee before releasing it, depending upon how strong you have requested your coffee be. In terms of maintenance, it's very simple: - rinse out the coffee grinds with each use (either throw away the paper filters or rinse the permanent gold filter) - every few uses, unlock the bean hopper that opens up a pathway from the bean hopper/grinder to the filter to ensure no coffee grinds are built up. That's it. That's honestly not much work. Overall, I'm very happy with it. It's still not as good as a good grinder + French Press, but for those 'quick' coffee days where you still want something with quality, it does a very good job. Meanwhile, I still have a Keurig with random flavors for when company comes over and wants more variety. The first one lasted about 5 years and then we bought a new one. We love the thermal carafe, gold reusable filter and timer. However we've had nothing but issues with the grinder. The grinder on the second one stopped working after 1 month. WS replaced it and now after 6 months we are having issues again. It requires constant cleaning out of the grinder gear and bin which is a pain. I honestly can't come up with anything I'd do differently. It is expensive, but I can't even begin to tell you how many coffee makers have I wasted money and and thrown away. For the people that complain about the grinder, give me a break! How many quiet coffee grinders are there??? Grind your beans at night and make your cup in the morning. There is maintenance involved with this unit, but you're asking it to do much more than just make coffee. It needs to be cleaned, don't be so lazy! If you're a serious coffee drinker, have at least an 8th grade education, then give this unit serious consideration. Trust me, I'm far from a genius... There isn't a person around who doesn't ask me about how good my coffee is. We purchased the Breville Grind Control Coffee maker from W&S .....we cannot get rid of the error code stating it needs descaling. We have cleaned it so many times with white vinegar and water as suggested. Is there another cleaner you recommend? One thing to make sure is that the machine is actually in descale mode. Make sure that once the tank is filled, the STRENGTH button is pressed and held for 5 seconds so that the process begins automatically. If that button is not held, the brewer is essentially just brewing a pot of coffee which won't clean the machine as intended and the process is not complete until the READY message appears on the screen.
