Rated 3 out of 5 by Joe Wilson from Size matters The 54mm portafilter is not a standard size. It is extremely hard to find accessories for it... accessories you WILL inevitably seek out as you quest for making the amazing coffee everyone is raving about in their reviews. TL;DR This was my first espresso machine, and as a beginner, I knew it wasn’t easy making good espresso. Nonetheless I was eager to take on the challenge. I didn’t know how deeply complex the process was until I was making the mistakes that most beginners make, and was on the road of discovery. The Barista Pro does a good job of eliminating some of the challenges of making good espresso: pressure control, constant volumetric yield, precise water temp, digitally controlled grind size, timed dosing... But this being a semi-automatic machine, there is obviously the human factor to consider. And as I struggled with being the weakest link in the system, I discovered that my avenues for improvement were constrained by design. As the human, your job is dosing, distribution, and tamping. The Barista Pro does the rest. Unfortunately Breville is working against you on this one. 53mm distribution tools are hard to find, and extremely expensive. Oddly, the Barista Pro comes with what I thought was a distribution tool... “The Razor”. But this tool is not for evenly pushing the grinds around the basket. It’s intended use is for making sure amateurs aren’t cramming fistfuls of coffee into the machine. The instructions in the manual are to tamp, then trim off any excess, thus ensuring the “perfect” dose. Knowing what I do now, this part of the process seems counter productive towards dialing in your shots. Dosing based on volume, seems less accurate than dosing by weight like the pros. Also, it is not recommended to disturb the puck after tamping. But here the manufacturer is telling the user to forcibly scrape and drag the surface of the puck, possibly setting up a poor extraction. Also, the included tamper seems oddly undersized. After reading the importance of uniform density in the puck, and how it affects extraction, I am really disappointed in the design of this accessory and how “sloppy” it fits with the basket. I agonize over getting level tamps, and there’s no way it’s compressing all the grounds along the sides of the basket. The tamper could easily have been made 2mm wider for a much better fit. Sure, it’s got a nifty magnet to store it away, but the tool is subpar. At least it will not be taking up counter space once you replace it with a much better fitting third party tool which is machined with a higher level of precision. At one point in my studies, I learned that a bottomless portafilter can be an invaluable oracle for those who want greater insights into their grind distribution and puck density. No one makes a 54mm bottomless portafilter for the Barista Pro. NO ONE. Breville doesn’t even make one! There isn’t even a cheap knock-off from China. There is literally ONE company in Australia who will convert a brand new retail portafilter, into a bottomless portafilter. It’s a hefty investment if you don’t have access to a machinist shop to DIY. I am still enjoying the Barista Pro, and I’m confident it can make some darn good coffee, I just feel that the manufacturer has gone out of their way to sabotage the learning curve towards achieving that goal.Date published: 2019-05-23Rated 5 out of 5 by patr from Awesome Coffee Maker I have always wanted one and am so happy I did! It looked complicated to use at first, but after a few tries I have it down to an easy task. The most difficult task was getting the grind correct, but after that this is a piece of cake to operate. It definitely saves money than having to go to the coffee shop and spending tons of money. In my opinion it makes better espresso and lattes than the major coffee chains. If your wondering about getting one please do it you wont regret it. I love the sleek design. I loved the fact it came with everything you need to start. From the coffee grinder that is built in, quick heat up, and professional level steam wand, this machine is the way to go. I also love the easy to read screen. Cleanup is minimal.I dont have anything bad to say about this product,it is all I hoped for and then some.I actually have family and friends that come over to request their favorite drinks! They save money too,its a win win for everyone! So if your in the market for a great machine, this is the ticket. This is obviously a big upgrade for me. so after few trial and error i have gotten and hang of this and I love it. The best part I love is the coffee grinder built in. It gives me the best fresh smell/taste of the coffee. no nee dto buy all different types of pods and sizes/brands. With customization of the level of grinder, and control on the temperature of the water - it is really advanced and can be customized very much. it has lot of built in notifications such as telling you the level of water. so you don't have to open things up / guess. you can also add hot water to the coffee/espresso as needed. One thing to notice would be that this unit is a bit heavy at ~25 lbs. so it's good that it'll be sitting on your counter and not moving around too much. Overall, with a bit of experience you get after working it (unless you were barista professionally), this is an excellent luxurious machine you can get for the price. You can't beat the fresh flavored coffee. I love my coffee and having the ability to make what I usually go out and buy is like my ultimate dream. I truly am one of those people who can drink coffee all day long. My ultimate favorite is a flat white and I am determined to learn how to make one. My husband loves his white chocolate Mocha. I am not positive I am doing it right but he loves what I have been able to make for him. This was definitely a learning curve, I have never used anything remotely like the Breville the Barista Pro. I read all the inserts and instructions included and they were extremely helpful. My first cup was perfect just too my liking. The rich creamy milk foam was better than what I would have got from my local Barista. I can honestly say I never knew coffee at home could taste so rich and fresh. It didn't have a bitter taste that I have experienced in the past. I have made about 25 cups in this in the past few weeks and each time I use it I get a little better and the flavor does too ( after my first cup I didn't think it could). Of course, being a newbie I am learning a few things that I need to change. First I have to find different Espresso cups. They just don't work placing them under the spout. As you can see from the above pic they just are not a good fit and no matter how I have placed them some of the Espresso misses. This makes for uneven shots. I am ordering different shot glasses and hope this resolved my problem. I have found a lot of information and accessories on the Breville webpage. My favorite is the rich creamy frothy milk. You get luxurious warm froth to your exact liking. I like mine with a light foam, Steamed until it looks like a glossy wet paint. My husband, on the other hand, likes a thick heavy foam. Making the perfect steamed milk is extremely easy with the Breville Barista Pro. As a matter of fact, this has been easier to use then I had expected. I get to enjoy my favorite Espressos at home whenever I get the craving for an Espresso. I hope that you found this useful and will love the Breville Barista Pro if you decide to buy one. I know I have been telling everyone I know How much I love the Breville Barista Pro! Love how I can get high quality right in my home. As it only takes 3 seconds to heat up which makes it easy to get great tasting expresso. The LCD buttons and screen are simple to use and gives me the right information to make the perfect cup anytime if the day. Love having a milk frother at my fingertips. The Baristo Pro is by far the nicest home cappuccino machine I have seen on the market. I really like that the bean grinder is attached so I don't have the mess of grinding my beans in another grinder and transferring the ground espresso and making a mess. This machine eliminates that problem. It comes with all of the accessories you could need including filters for the water as well as the milk container. I especially like that this machine is all digital. This makes it very user-friendly and virtually fool-proof. The microfoam that the milk steamer makes is really nice and gives you a really good foam that tates good and coats the tongue. Although I can't yet make fancy foam designs like a professional barista, I feel like one when I use the Barista Pro. I have been wanting an espresso machine for years now, but was not sure which brand was the best. Well in my opinion this machine was worth the wait and hours of research. At first I was a little intimated by this. It’s a lot of machine. But after reading the manual and watching some youtube videos, I’m starting to get the hang of it. If you look at my pictures, my first attempt to make a green tea latte was good. I got nice bubbles from the frother, but my second attempt was by far my best. The bubbles were great and the foam, perfect. Just like the big chain coffee houses. I personally like extra foam on my lattes and now I can do it myself. It is a big machine, but I like the fact that it fits nicely under my kitchen cabinets. It looks great and stylish. I still need some practice on warming the milk. But it does heat up fast, like 45 seconds. It does take time to clean after each use, and I found it a bit challenging at first when cleaning the wand. The milk dries up on it, so you have to use warm water and a soapy sponge and then rinse it off with another wet towel to keep it new looking and clean. But I’m sure once I become more “experienced” with it, it will be like second nature to me. I love that it has a bean hopper that grounds my beans for each use. My house smells amazing when it grinds them. It has everything included with the machine, including a great frothing pitcher. And I was amazed at how well and evenly the espresso comes out and into the little pitcher for pouring and making my lattes. I’m still trying to master a caramel macchiato tho. That's my goal with this machine. It comes with all the accessories so no needing to buy anything extra. I’m so glad I waited and now have the Breville Barista Pro. You will not be disappointed with this. Can oily beans be used with the Breville Barista Pro semi auto espresso machine?Yes, oil beans can be used in the Breville® BES878BSS Barista™ Pro. However, extra care will need to be used in cleaning the grinder, running the cleaning cycle and ensuring that the filters remain unclogged as the oils being on that much more on the surface can cause excessive clogging and build up.Date published: 2019-07-12
Does anyone keep this on top of a counter top that is under a cabinet? I'm thinking of making the one area of my kitchen a coffee nook but worried that it won't clear the cabinet.(We are moving into this house in a few months, so I can't take measurement)The height including the hopper is 16inches. It would not fit under my cabinets. I had to adjust the hinges on the cabinet door , raising them about 1/8 of an inch, so at least I have clearance to open the door. but I cannot push the machine all the way to the backsplash. Also, even if it fit under the cabinet you will need a lot of clearance to lift the bean hopper or water reservoir. I have to slide mine forward a bit to access the water tank. Does this machine make plain coffee as well?Hi Peggy, This machine makes espresso based drinks and can make an Americano by brewing espresso and adding hot water. It does not make drip coffee.Date published: 2019-04-29
How does this differ from the Barista Express. I was in store looking. We are in the market to purchase a really great coffee/espresso maker. That will work for our different times work lifeThe machine is similar to the express, however it is FAR more precise as it has a more powerful wand which results in a more frothier milk. Instant switch over from steaming milk to extraction of the coffee (so its not wait time), 3 second heat up when you switch the machine on. Tells you have low water level (beeps) when water container is almost empty. LCD screen helps with determining the water temp, the amount of extraction from the coffee, grind size, etc. the machine also tells you what type of cleaning is required instead of the CLEAN ME Light that appears on the express. It shows you (ON THE LCD) whether you need to DESCALE or FLUSH when a cleaning cycle is required. The cleaning cycle is separate from descaling This machine is also sleeker looking than the express.Date published: 2019-05-04
