Not Noisy!Date published: 2019-02-01Rated 4 out of 5 by LHO_WA from Not For The Faint Of Heart The only way I have been able to understand and use the Pressure Cooker was because I have used pressure cookers for the past 40 plus years. Trying to read and understand the owners manual is confusing at best. Pressure cooking has always been easy, a no brainer. You put the stuff in the pot, be sure to add some liquid, seal the lid, attach the pressure regulator, put the pot on the heat, when it gets up to pressure, either high or low, you start the timer, adjust the heat, then wait. When the timer goes off you remove the pot from the heat then decide if you want to release the pressure rapidly by running cold water over the pot or allow the pressure to reduce slowly as the pot cools down on it's own. Not this baby! The controls on the top have five positions, named for foods and no indications of pressure settings except for one that indicates that it had something to do with releasing the pressure. The setting for beans does not include green beans or Lima beans. Those are found on the vegetable setting. The other two are meat and seafood. You put the stuff in the pot. It comes with a steamer basket and tell you that you need to use it when steaming but not when boiling. Steaming requires a minimal amount of liquid and boiling requires a minimal amount of liquid. The amounts are different, but it is unclear when you need to boil or steam or what you need or should consider for steaming or boiling or food setting to use for either boiling or steaming. So far we have a food in the pot. It is conceivable that the food item may be associated with one of the food settings. If not, you will need to study and research if your food item is a meat or similar, or a bean or similar, or maybe a seafood or vegetable. Now the fun begins. Beside deciding which food group your food item may fit in you also need to decide how much time you need to keep the food in the pot at chosen food groups unknown pressure to cook it completely. The required time is dependent on the pressure, but the pressure is unknown. Setting the timer is fairly straight forward except for not knowing the time it needs to set to. I found an old owners manual and recipe book from another, older brand of pressure cooker. This book listed food items, many of them, and the pressure and time to cook each item. Armed with that data I blindly chose a setting as in "Hey, Bill! Pick a number from one to four." Set the time, put it on the stove then did what the book said to do when the pot "beeped". All-Clad make a good product, but trying to reinvent a centuries old technology using new terminology is very confusing to me. I survived its first use by me and I am confident the fog will clear with more experience. However, if I had never used a pressure cooker before or had no understanding of pressure cooking theory and techniques, the All-Clad owner's manual would be of minimal usefulness and is likely the reason for the low product recommendations seen elsewhere. But, the timer broke which renders my pressure cooker useless. I called all-clad and the customer service representative wasn’t sure where to get the timer. I received an email a day or two later saying I could go to an appliance website and order.. The website itself was difficult to navigate. Instead of All-Clad’s product #, it was some other number and took me awhile to find. I ordered it and it’s been 5 weeks. Still no timer. I wrote them on Wednesday and asked for a follow-up, still nothing, no answer. I’ve looked for other places to buy it, can’t find. I used my pressure cooker for a lot of things and now part of me wishes I had bought the less expensive insta-pot. I had been wanting a pressure cooker, and All-Clad has amazing qualities with even heating, ease of cleaning, and excellent durability. The features in a pressure cooker to look for are a thick base, straight sides, wide opening, and a pressure indicator that can be easily seen. What I love about this pot is it has all that, a pressure sensing timer, AND variable pressure settings. The beauty is that all of the recipes I’ve found online work very well in this pot as well. The little pressure sensing timer in the lid eliminates the guess work. It’s removable, so cleanup is a snap as well. Let’s address some of the problems noted in the reviews: the lid “sticks” in the lock or unlocked position. Or, it won’t start the “timer” no matter how long it’s been heating. Both of these issues can be solved by making sure the rubber gasket has been put into the lid properly. How to tell if it’s not in correctly? The lid “sticks” either in the locked or the lever won’t move to any of the pressure settings. Take the gasket out (it easily comes out for cleaning anyway), flip it over and put it back in. It won’t start the timer? Make sure the rubber gasket is in good shape (I don’t run the gasket through the dishwasher). Make sure the lid is clean (no clogs in the pressure relief valves). The timer will not engage if pressure isn’t achieved, or the pressure relief valve is clogged. It’s a stove top item, so the beauty is this item can brown meat, “sauté” vegetables, etc. before pressure cooking. The thick base and straight sides makes scorching food a thing of the past. AND, it’s All-Clad— synonymous with easy to clean. I use this pot almost daily in many of the same ways my friends use their “instant pot”. All-Clad Will Not Honor Warranty I purchased this pressure cooker at the recommendation and for the first few weeks, it was fantastic! However, the removable timer/control panel gradually started to fail, with the volume getting softer and softer until there is no volume at all. I tried contacting All Clad's customer support line thinking maybe there was a volume control that I was missing. After getting the run around from them for several weeks, I learned that wasn't the problem. By then, the timer was completely inaudible. I tried to return the pressure cooker to the retailer but by now was out of the return period. I tried returning it to All Clad but they told me that ALL CLAD DOES NOT HONOR ITS PRODUCT WARRANTIES. If the retailer would take the product back, they could return it to All Clad for a refund since it is defective. But since I am outside the return period, and the ultimate customer, All Clad will not help. So All Clad gets to pocket my money, dishonor its warranty, and I am stuck with a very expensive pot. I replaced this unit with a Breville pressure cooker instead (which I love). THIS IS THE LAST PURCHASE I WILL BE MAKING FROM ALL-CLAD. All that you would expect in an All-Clad product and made in France. Extraordinary quality, ease of cooking with superb results. I like the fact that it is used on the stove vs. electronic. As well, the pot is stainless and sturdy to finish recipes and continue cooking. I did a tremendous amount of research and tested 2 other products and this is by far superior in every way. My primary reason for purchasing it was for beans and rice to decrease cooking time during the week when I am working. I have found myself also using it to steam vegetables-they cook perfectly. I also did mashed potatoes and look forward to trying the meat dishes. I can't say enough good things about this product.
