Wood Serving Boards

Wood serving boards are a common sight in trendy and upscale bistros and restaurants. Dining establishments use wood serving boards in a variety of ways, providing a creative alternative to the usual food trays and other serveware. For special occasions at home, these wooden serveware options add the same unique touch for serving hors d'oeuvres, salads, desserts, cookies and other tasty morsels.

Wood serving boards come in different shapes, colors and sizes, and they are hewn from different hardwoods, including walnut, teak, olive and even acacia. Natural wood patterns give each piece of this serveware their own character and unique design right down to the color of the wood, grain pattern and surface texture. Among the shapes that these pieces of serveware come in include square, rectangle, half-moon, oval, rounded rectangle and trapezoid. The sizes of their serving surfaces range from 6 to 12 inches, 13 to 18 inches and 19 to 24 inches in length.

Our wooden serving boards have several subtypes, including bread boards, charcuterie boards, platters and trays. They come with or without handles and some have added features, including inserts for cups and slots for sauces and bread knives. Apart from their use as serveware, some wooden serving boards double as cutting boards. These dual-purpose wood serving boards usually have the reverse and often flatter side as the cutting board. Some dining establishments, however, use the same side for cutting and serving the food items as part of their food presentation.

Among the most common concerns about wooden dinnerware and other wooden kitchen items is food safety. These concerns do have merit due to wood being a porous material and thus is at a higher risk of microbial cross-contamination. However, proper washing and sanitation should be enough to make them safe again.

When washing wooden serving boards, pay special attention to grooves and decorative etchings, making sure to wash and rinse these areas properly. Sanitize the board with chlorine water following existing food sanitation standards. Dry the boards properly before storing them in a clean area. Examine the boards regularly for warping as it also results in cracking. Do not use serving boards with cracks and deep gouges as virus and bacteria tend to remain in these areas even after a thorough washing.

Williams-Sonoma offers a variety of wooden serving boards, as well as other tabletop and bar serveware. Available serving boards also include reversible salad boards and boards that are made out of slate and synthetic materials.
