Frosting & Decorating a Cake
These tips show you how to frost and decorate a birthday cake. (For the complete recipe, which is designed for young bakers, type Birthday Cake in the recipe search box.) After decorating, serve the cake immediately, or cover loosely and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature before serving.
Place 1 cake layer, top side up, on a cake stand or serving plate lined with 5 strips of parchment or waxed paper. Spread a thick layer of frosting on top with an icing spatula. Start in the center and move outward.
Place the second cake layer on top and press on it gently with your hands to make sure it is level.
Spread the rest of the frosting evenly over the top and sides of the cake with the spatula.
Carefully remove the paper and decorate the cake with candies, sprinkles and birthday candles. Have fun decorating with your friends!
