Summary

Grow your own peaches and enjoy one of summer’s ultimate pleasures: the sweet, delicate flavor a just-picked ripe peach. The juicy fruit is delicious fresh in salads, poached, baked into pies and cobblers, and preserved.

Contender: Provides a crop of big yellow fruit just when other peach trees are slowing down. The flesh of the peach is firm and resists browning, and the freestone pit removes easily. Tolerant of late-spring frost, Contender's a good choice in growing zones where other peaches falter. Fruits in mid-August.

Harvester: This luscious yellow freestone peach bursts with sweet-tart flavor. It’s a reliable producer that thrives in a wide range of growing zones. Fruits in late July to early August.

June Gold: Kicks off peach season with large, firm, slightly red fruit that has creamy yellow flesh. This clingstone variety needs only 650 chill hours, making it an excellent choice for temperate growing zones. Fruits in late May to early June.

Red Haven: Firm freestone fruit with a good acid balance and almost no fuzz makes the Red Haven a popular choice for canning, baking, freezing and simply eating. It's a vigorous, fast-growing tree that bears fruit young. Fruits in late July to early August.

Rouston Red: An excellent producer that bears large, luscious freestone peaches early in the season, giving you a head start on summer canning. Fruits in early July.

A slow, root-saturating, one-hour trickle once a week is recommended for a new tree. The watering schedule should be adjusted accordingly if it rains or is very dry. Water twice weekly during dry spells.
