  • A Burchell's zebra rests on the Athi Plains of Kenya in this photograph by Carl E. Akeley, drawn from the archives of National Geographic. A conservationist, nature photographer and inventor, Akeley made several expeditions to Africa—including one with Theodore Roosevelt in 1909– and was considered the father of modern taxidermy. Out of a deep desire to preserve Africa's wilderness and protect the animals, he helped to establish the first national park on that continent.
