Working out of a darkroom housed in a historic Connecticut barn, award-winning photographer Jody Dole and his two sons use a 19th-century technique known as wet-plate tintype, rarely used by modern photographers, to create captivating images rich in character and detail. Each print reveals tonal differences unique to the process—no two are alike. The clipped corners on Whaling Ship and Meter Race are Dole’s homage to the 19th-century technique used by photographers to fit the corners of the tin plates more easily into the camera holders and frame cases.
