Old Fashioned Latticed Cherry Pie

To make the pastry, in a large bowl, stir together the flour and salt. Using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in the butter and shortening until the mixture resembles coarse meal. In a cup or small bowl, combine the water and vinegar. Sprinkle the mixture over the top and, using a fork, toss lightly to moisten evenly. Gather the dough into a ball, being careful not to work it too much, and place on a lightly floured work surface. Divide the dough in half and wrap each half with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or for up to 24 hours.

On a lightly floured work surface, roll out 1 ball of dough into a 12-inch round about 1/8 inch thick. Fold the dough in half and then into quarters and transfer it to a 9-inch pie dish. Unfold and gently press into the dish. Trim the edges flush with the rim of the dish. Place in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Position a rack in the lower third of an oven and preheat to 400°F.

Meanwhile, make the filling: In a bowl, toss together the cherries, sugar, flour and kirsch.

Remove the remaining dough from the refrigerator and roll out into an 11-inch round. Using a small knife or a pastry wheel, cut into strips about 3/4 inch wide. Place a large sheet of waxed paper on the work surface and dust lightly with flour. Placing the strips about 1/4 inch apart, weave them on the waxed paper to form a lattice.

Remove the pastry shell from the freezer and pour the cherry mixture into it. Gently lift the waxed paper over the filling and carefully slide the lattice onto the pie. Trim the edges flush with the pan rim and crimp to form an attractive edge. In a small bowl, beat together the egg yolk and milk, and brush over the lattice and pastry edge.

Bake until the juices bubble thickly and the crust is golden, 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Transfer the dish to a wire rack and let the pie cool for 1 hour before serving. Accompany each slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Makes one 9-inch pie; serves 6 to 8.

  • Rated 1 out of 5 by from 2 Blenders in 2 Years . This item doesn't last. Using it once or twice/week, didn't last us an average of one year of usage. The second one managed to almost melt itself. Breville's Customer Service wasn't any help (besides offering a token "discount coupon" that was never sent!!). Model did not meet my expectations

Rated 1 out of 5 by from short life I am so disappointed that my loved Breville blender failed after a year and a half. All I ever asked it to do was whip up my Bulletproof coffee with butter. It did a great job of frothing it up, but 15 months is too short a work life for this expensive a machine with only one use per day. I never asked for crushed ice or pureed broccoli. Loved the self clean feature. Great idea - now just make it hold up!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a Good Blender I'm very disappointed that this blender only lasted me for 2 years. Its still sort of works but does not crush up the ice, making a funny noise and half doing the job. I make smoothies everyday and I've never had a blender not do want this one should do. Very disappointing!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Purchased at Store about 4-5 years ago I love my blender, I purchased at the store about 4-5 years ago and it works great, but i have to say that I don't use it everyday. I only make smoothies in summer and again not daily. I use to blend items for cooking and occassional smoothle with ice. Love that the canister is glass, so it's easy to clean. I have more than a few Breville products and I love them. They appear to be good quality products. Based on other reviewer's experience a vitamix is probably the way to go and worth the investment if you are making smoothies with ice every day.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible blender - been through two We make smoothies in our blender a couple of times a week - fresh fruit and nut butters, nothing too complicated. We are on our second replacement from Breville and it is again not working. I wish I could post a video to show how weak slash nonexistent the power on this blender is. This is not a Williams-Sonoma level quality product let alone a decent buy for the money. Will upgrade to a Vitamix and call this a sunk cost.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked for 2 years We make smoothies every day. This blender worked pretty well everyday for 2 years. Suddenly it will not turn on and the red light flashes. I also didn't like that i had to stand and hold the top on while it blended as the top would work it's way up and come off during blending.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaked after 6 months It leaked after 6 months. My husband makes a smoothie every day and never had a blender that crushed ice as he wanted. I went through 4 blenders in 5 years until I invested in the Vitamix which can pulverize root veggies!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good while it lasted (not long enough) I used this blender an average of 3 to 4 times a week, sometimes daily, for about 4 months with no problems. When I tried a new smoothie recipe that had some chopped dates and bananas along with milk and yogurt, it started to stall. The container was a little more full than usual so I took out some of the contents and tried again. Then it began to smell like the motor was burning out. I turned it off completely and emptied everything out. I let it cool off for several hours, and although the motor turned on later, it was no longer working effectively. I was very disappointed because for the most part it worked well until then. It does not seem the motor is very durable or powerful on this unit. Maybe I just got a lemon, because the company has a good reputation.
