Between 1860 and 1865, London-born American artist Alfred Rudolph Waud covered the Army of the Potomac for the New York Illustrated News, visually documenting some of the greatest battles of the Civil War. Meticulous reproductions of his work, these four images show Union ships in the fine detail that characterized Waud's work. After the war, he went on to illustrate for Harper's Weekly.
